This is Engineering 2024
Short films from finalists of the #ThisIsEngineering2024 competition for third level engineering students will be shown at the 'This is Engineering…' Short Film Festival screening on 8th March 2024, sponsored by Engineers Ireland West Region in collaboration with SFI MaREI Centre, Construct Innovate and University of Galway.
The aim of the competition is to explain engineering to primary and secondary school students through original, imaginative and engaging videos that arrest, entertain, provoke thought and showcase engineering. The competition runs as part of Engineers Week 2024 and is free to enter for all students registered on an engineering degree programme in a third level institution on the Island of Ireland.
Here are the finalists of the #ThisIsEngineering2024 competition:
Tenis Ranjan (University of Galway)
According to Tenis, Engineering is the art of problem-solving and innovation to enhance lives. The bicycle helmet stands as a crucial creation, safeguarding cyclists' lives. Demonstrations with wrapped and unwrapped eggs illustrate the helmet's vital role in head protection. Engineering ensures worry-free bicycle rides, shielding against potential head injuries. However, it's essential to recognize that helmets may not withstand severe impacts, such as car accidents. This highlights both the beauty and limitations of engineering in promoting safety and addressing specific challenges.
Lala Rukh (University of Galway)
In this video, Lala describes in a simple way what engineering is. Lala shows how engineers use their imagination and problem solving to create amazing things.

Joseph and the GEEC team aims this video at those Interested in creativity, teamwork, maths, and science. If you are one of those people, you might have the makings of a great engineer! Engineering, a vital STEM field, involves researching, designing, and creating machines and structures that shape our world. Take the Geec, an energy-efficient car crafted by University of Galway students, soon racing across Europe. Their project showcases a fraction of what engineering has to offer. Engineering is more than just occupation; it's about envisioning the unimaginable for future generations.
Liam Holmes (ATU Galway)
In Liam’s video, the basic ideas and design processes of engineering are visualized and briefly explained through the use of illustrations and descriptive text. The concept of engineering can be intimidating at first glance but this video provides a simple yet significant overview that all young students can use as a guide for their first steps into the field of engineering.
Farzaneh Azarkaman (University of Galway)
In her video, Farzaneh simply explains her definition of engineering. In her view engineering is the magic that combines different fields of science to make dreams come true.
Tom Maye (ATU Galway) and Eamon Gallagher (University of Galway)
In this short video clip, Tom & Eamon aim to provide an insight into what engineers do, whilst remaining fun and exciting. A rough outline of the engineering process is shown, using an example of a 3D printed part to fix a broken plastic clip. An emphasis was placed on choosing videos and topics from several of his personal projects and projects with friends. This also highlighted the teamwork aspect to engineering and showed how much fun it is to create things with others.
Supharoek Sornsomrit (University College Dublin)
This video introduces kids to the exciting world of engineering in just a minute! Through engaging visuals and simple explanations, it highlights how engineers use science, math, and creativity to solve problems and create amazing things like bridges, robots, and gadgets. The video encourages kids to imagine themselves as future engineers, inspiring them to make the world a better place through innovation and ingenuity.
Danillo Viana Andrade Reis (University of Galway)
Danillo asks if we know what Engineering is. When chickens use problem solving to decide on the best strategy to cross a road (or a bridge). Safely, on budget and in time for a dinner party with lots of corn and chicken dance.
