River Bridge in Galway

CRANN (Climate-Resilient Adapted National Network of Bridges) is an EPA (Environment Protection Agency) funded research project led by the University of Galway in collaboration with TU Delft and Queen's University Belfast that aims to strengthen the resilience of bridge infrastructure to climate change. As extreme weather events become more frequent, bridge scour and flooding pose increasing risks to transport networks, public safety, and regional connectivity. CRANN develops data-driven tools and decision-support frameworks that integrate environmental data, monitoring technologies, and risk analysis to identify vulnerable bridges and support evidence-based adaptation and investment decisions. Working closely with transport authorities (i.e. Department of Infrastructure Ireland (DfI)), policymakers, and communities, the project delivers practical solutions to support climate-resilient, sustainable bridge management across Ireland.

CRANN project is also is leading the establishment of the Bridge Owners Forum Ireland (BOFI) —a new national platform designed to support collaboration and knowledge sharing among Irish bridge stakeholders.
