Prof Roger Watson

Professor Roger Watson PhD RN FRCP Edin FRCN FAAN
Roger Watson is a biology graduate of The University of Edinburgh with a PhD in biochemistry from The University of Sheffield who qualified in nursing at St George’s Hospital, London. He has a special interest in the feeding and nutritional problems of older people with dementia. He is Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Advanced Nursing and Editor of Nursing Open and an Editorial Board member of the WikiJournal of Medicine. He has honorary and visiting positions in China, Hong Kong, and Australia. He is Professor of Nursing, University of Hull, UK and was a member of the UK 2008 Research Assessment Exercise sub-panel for Nursing and Midwifery and a 2014 Research Excellence Framework sub-panel for Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy. In 2017 he was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame.

Adjunct Lecturers in School of Nursing and Midwifery

Áine Binchy (RANP, RGN, RCN, RNP, BSc (Hons), MSc Advanced Practice Nursing (Neonatology)) is currently employed as an advanced nurse practitioner in Galway University Hospital. She commenced her general nursing career in Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital and postgraduate paediatrics training at the National Children’s Hospital, Harcourt Street. After a number of years working in cancer genetics, she completed a return to nursing course in 1999. Since, then she has specialised in Neonatology, in the UK and latterly in Galway. New-born resuscitation and infant nutrition are her main areas of interest.

 

Elizabeth Breslin (MHSc, MA, HDip Management, BSc(Hons) Nursing, HDip (Ortho) is a registered general nurse (RGN) with experience in Orthopaedics and related fields. She currently works in the Nursing and Midwifery Planning and Development Unit (HSE) North West. This is a Regional Unit and which is focused on supporting nurses and midwives and the wider MDT in relation to the delivery of safe and person centred care across all health care divisions. She has a specific responsibility in relation to Nursing and Midwifery role development, particularly around supporting the identification advanced and specialist nursing and midwifery practice roles. Elizabeth is an affiliate member of the Centre for Person-Centred Practice Research at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, where she is currently undertaking doctoral studies. Research interests include: Person Centred Practice, Facilitation, Practice Development and Dementia Care. Elizabeth is currently co-facilitating a regional (Donegal) practice-based quality improvement project in the area of Dementia which is focused on supporting the healthcare team to enhance cultures of care which are collaborative, inclusive and participatory. She also acts as a peer reviewer for an international journal.

 

Patrick Browne (FFNMRCSI, RANP, RNP, RGN, PG Dip (Advanced Nursing Practice), PG Cert (Nurse/Midwife Prescribing), MHSc (Health Services Research), BSc Parkinson’s Care, BNS General Nursing, and Dip. Nursing Studies (General)) has also completed short course diplomas in Anatomy and Physiology, Human Resources, Nursing Leadership and Care Management, Operational Management, and Workplace Health and safety, Legal Studies and Teaching skills for Educators, Manufacturing and Product Design.
His current appointment is as, Ireland’s first and only, Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner Neurology for movement disorders, in Galway University Hospitals. Current research interests include assistive and therapeutic technologies in Parkinson’s disease and service delivery methodologies and innovations. He is a member of: Galway Neuroscience Centre, Irish Chapter Director of the World Parkinson’s Program, the Irish National Steering and Advisory Committee for palliative care in Parkinson’s disease. He is a member of the International Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Society Telemedicine Task Force and former Co-Chair (European Section) of the Non-Physician Health Care Professionals Special Interest Group – International Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Society.

 

Alan Costello (RANP, RPN, RNP) BNS (Hons), MSc Nursing, PG Dip (Advanced Practice Nursing) is currently working as an advanced nurse practitioner (Liaison Psychiatry) in University Hospital Galway. He originally completed his nursing studies at St Vincent's Hospital Fairview, Dublin, and then completed both his Bachelor’s and Master's degrees in Nursing at Trinity College Dublin. He is a registered nurse prescriber following completion of the nurse-prescribing programme at NUIG in 2018, and is an authorised officer for the HSE since 2018. He has also undertaken additional training in psychotherapies namely SFBT (DCU) and DBT (BiDBT), and Forensic Nursing (RCSI). He has worked in various settings including mental health approved centres, community mental health teams, forensic mental health, self-harm national programme, and liaison psychiatry. He began his first CNS role in West Dublin mental health services in 2005. During this time he was practice supervisor with postgraduate students undertaking the MSc/PG Dip Nursing at DCU. He was the first CNS appointed in HSE West under the national clinical programme for self-harm in 2013 and worked in this role until 2019, when he began his candidate ANP role. His educational interests in the emergency department has focused on the triage of mental health presentations, best practice treatment and management of self-injury and mental health presentations to the ED. He has taught on the MSc/PG Dip in emergency care BSc Hons mental health nursing at NUIG. Previously acted as DBT team lead for two years, and is a member of the GRMHS audit committee. Member of social inclusion professionals group NUIG. Member of the GRMHS vision strategy steering group.

 

Nicola Crean

 

Rachael Dalton (MHSc, BSc(Hons), HDip oncology, RNT, RGN) has worked in Oncology for the past 12 years. She was a staff nurse within the oncology inpatient setting for 6 years before working as a research associate in oncology clinical trials for 2 years. Her current role is that of clinical nurse specialist in prostate cancer and she has been in post for over 3 years. She has developed a comprehensive cancer survivorship programme in Galway university hospital. Working closely with cancer care west she runs a prostate cancer support group and information series for prostate cancer patients and their families. She won the GUH research award 2018 for her description of this service. She has developed and facilitated men’s health educations events across the west of Ireland. She is reviewer for the Irish cancer society publications and British Journal of Nursing. She has numerous poster and article publications on prostate cancer nursing and cancer survivorship. She has a keen interest in nurse education and has facilitated seminars, lectures and clinical skill sessions within undergraduate and postgraduate nursing studies for the past 5 years.

 

Selene Daly is a Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Dermatology working in Sligo University Hospital. She trained in St. Angela’s College in Sligo and has achieved 24 years nursing experience with 17 years spent in Dermatology. Skin is her passion. Her role as a Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Dermatology involves seeing patients in OPD, to performing skin surgery and treating patients with phototherapy light. She also works with children and their families in treating and controlling eczema. She is keenly interested in research and audit and has worked with many groups including travellers, farmers and teenagers. She loves to teach and has written newspaper and magazine articles covering various skin care topics and she appears on Newstalk’s Pat Kenny show with a monthly slot on Dermatology. As well as a B.N. in General Nursing she is a registered nurse prescriber and has a Masters in Clinical Dermatology from the University of Hertfordshire and a Post Graduate qualification in Nursing Education.

 

Carmel Hoey is a Registered Nurse and Midwife, Carmel’s educational achievements include a Dip. Nursing Studies, Dip. Healthcare Management, H-Dip Public Administration, MSc Health Services Management and a Diploma in Business and Executive Coaching.
Carmel currently holds the position of Director with the Nursing and Midwifery Planning and Development Unit HSE West - Mid West. Prior to that she worked in acute hospital services for many years, and more recently as a Nursing and Midwifery Planning and Development Officer leading on many initiatives within the Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services Director (ONMSD) & NMPDU and with the National Clinical and Integrated Care Programmes for Older People.

 

Jean James is a Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Neonatology at Galway University Hospitals since 2014. Jean is also a Registered Nurse, Midwife & Nurse Prescriber (RGN, RM, RNP) with a Dip in Management & Industrial Relations, Masters in Nursing from Trinity College, Diploma in Leadership & Quality in Healthcare from RCPI, and a Masters in Advanced Practice in Neonatology from RCSI in 2012. She has undertaken a number of educational programmes including the Neonatal Course in University Collage Hospital; London ENB 405; Teaching Skills ENB 997,  Jean has worked extensively in neonatal units both nationally & internationally. Jean’s research interests are on methods of temperature taking in neonates and evidence rounds implementation. She has implemented the LISA technique as a method of Surfactant administration for Neonates in Galway University Hospital.

 

Aine Keogh is a Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) since 2018 in Galway University Hospital. She was involved in the setting up of the IBD Nurses Association of Ireland and was secretary from 2017 – 2020 and National representative at the Nurse European Crohn’s and Colitis organisation from 2016 - 2019. She is currently on the IBD sub group of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology National Clinical Programme and has developed along with two of her colleagues the first IBD module (Level 9). It is currently up and running through Munster Technological University Tralee. She is involved in both academic and clinical research including clinical trials and has co-authored many peer reviewed articles as well as currently being a peer reviewer for an international journal.

 

Donna Langan BNS, RGN, Hdip Adult Respiratory Care, PG Cert (Nurse Prescribing), (MSc (Respiratory Care), PG Dip (Advanced Nursing Practice). She has worked in respiratory care for the past 15 years. She was a CNS for 9 years in GUH before registering as an ANP in Chronic Respiratory Disease in (2021) with a special interest in Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), Asthma and Pleural Disease. She is the secretary of the Irish Respiratory Nurse Association (ANÁIL) and is passionate about education of nurses on respiratory disease and improving the lives of the patients living with respiratory disease. She has worked on numerous quality improvement programs to improve the patient experience. She was a committee member on the development of the Irish Long Term Oxygen guidelines (2015). At a local level she is a lead facilitator of both the NIV Study Day and the Respiratory Study Day, empowering nurses at ward level to improve the care of patients that are living with a chronic respiratory disease. She has a special interest in the area of the breathlessness in chronic respiratory disease.

 

Roisin Lennon (Masters in Health Science (Advanced Practice), RAMP, RGN, RM, RMP BSc (Hons) Nursing). She has been working in Sligo as a registered advanced midwife practitioner since 2017 but she has been a member of the midwifery team there since 2003. She feels privileged to be a midwife and part of so many families’ pregnancy journey. In the past few years, she has been providing continuity of care for a caseload of women who would not meet the criteria for the supported care pathway. Her extended scope of practice at an advanced level enables her to provide an alternative care pathway for women within the midwifery philosophy of care giving. She also preceptors student midwives for their continuity placement and she enjoys sharing her experiences and knowledge with them. Before Sligo she trained and worked in Scotland as a midwife for many years and she did her nurse training in the Adelaide in Dublin. She have a special interest in aromatherapy, reflexology and postdates pregnancy treatments and she is also a IBCLC (lactation consultant). She is currently learning Spanish to keep the brain active.

 

Robert McConkey (RANP, RGN, RNP, MSc (Prostate Cancer Care), PGDip Nursing (Advanced Practice with Prescribing), Professional Certificate (Prescribing Ionising Radiation in Adults) has worked in urology for the past 15 years. He took up the post of Advanced Nurse Practitioner Urology (Bladder Cancer) in 2018 and developed the first nurse led cystoscopy bladder cancer surveillance program in Ireland.  He is the recipient of awards from the Irish Association of Urology Nurses, the British Association of Urology Nurses, and the European Association of Urology Nurses for his research and service development presentations.  He is a member of the European Association of Urology Nurses Scientific Congress Office responsible for developing the annual international urology nursing conference and is on the board of the European Urology Accreditation Board for Continuing Nursing Education.  He developed and delivers an NMBI approved bladder cancer instillation education program and delivers urology education programs with the CNME Galway.  His research interests include bladder cancer, advanced nursing practice and LGBT healthcare issues.  He has published a number of papers as first author and co-author in peer reviewed journals.

 

Connie McGilloway (RGN, RNP, RNT, RANP, FFNMRCSI) has worked in the area of sexual violence since 2010 as a CNS following completion of the H.Dip in Sexual Assault Forensic Examination (SAFE). Since 2020 she has worked as the RANP (Forensic Examiner) in the Donegal SATU, providing holistic forensic medico-legal care for all genders and gender identities, 14 years and over who have experienced sexual violence. She has undertaken the MSc (Healthcare Ethics & Law), PgDip (Advanced Practice with Prescribing), PgDip (Education) and attained a Fellowship by Education (RCSI). She is the national clinical lead in the development of a centralised web-based national SATU database system, a member of the National SART Guidelines Group, Chairperson of the National SATU Documentation Group, member of the National SATU Joint Review Implementation Team, a member of the International Association of Forensic Nursing (IAFN), the Academy of Forensic Nursing (AFN) and the Society for the Study of Sexually Transmitted Diseases in Ireland (SSSTDI). She teaches on the PgDip (SAFE) course and facilitates multi-agency/disciplinary training in sexual violence and related areas. Her research interests are the impact of sexual violence on vulnerable persons and has authored a section of the National SART Guidelines since 2014.

 

David McGuinness (RPN, BNS, HDip (Psych) MSc(Psych), PhD is a Clinical Nurse Manager 3 in the Galway Roscommon Mental Health Services (MHS). He is a registered psychiatric nurse, with over nineteen years' clinical and research experience. He holds a PhD from NUIG, a Master's in Psychology from Trinity College Dublin, HDip in Psychology and a degree in Nursing Studies from NUIG. He was awarded the Medtronic Prize for Academic Excellence consequent to degree results. He won a PhD Fellowship, and worked on a 4 Year Research Project that evaluated the operation and effects of the Mental Health Act 2001. He was seconded for 1.5 year to the Mental Health Commission as Assistant Inspector of Mental Health Services. Two central themes underpin his clinical and research work. The first is increasing service providers’ understanding of service users' experiences of MHS provision. The second theme focuses on informing the development and implementation of practice that are responsive to service user’s needs. David contributes to compliance and quality improvement projects and has published 11 peer reviewed articles (David McGuinness publications).

 

Shaini Shabu ( RGN, RN, RANP) is a Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner for Critical Care Outreach. She has an extensive critical care nursing background. She completed her nursing and midwifery education in Kerala, India, in 1994 and worked in various specialities at home and in the middle east. She moved to Galway, Ireland, in 2006 and commenced working in the general intensive care unit, University Hospital Galway. She graduated from NUIG with Postgraduate Diploma in Intensive Care Nursing (2009) and Masters in Health Science from Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (2013). She completed Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Practice with prescribing in 2018. She has ongoing involvement in teaching PG Dip Intensive Care Nursing. She coordinates and teaches on Recognition and Management of the Deteriorating Patient an NMBI approved, IPE simulation study day in collaboration with ICAPSS.
