Conference PPI Horizons: European Perspectives on Public and Patient Involvement

On the 8th April, the PPI Ignite Network @ University of Galway collaborated with Uppsala University, and University Medical Centre Gronigen  to host a successful and dynamic hybrid pan-European Conference exploring European Perspectives on PPI. The conference attracted over 180 registrants from across Europe and brought together speakers from Ireland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Switzerland the United Kingdom who shared insights from case studies, highlighting both the commonalities and differences in PPI practices across diverse European contexts. Throughout the conference, speakers and attendees discussed innovative strategies, collaborative approaches, and the nuanced challenges of integrating public and patient voices into research, gaining valuable perspectives on how these varied experiences contribute to shaping inclusive research across Europe.

The day was closed out by an interactive "Escape room" workshop delivered by our colleagues in Groningen (the first of its kind in Galway), which provided a hands-on experience of patient involvement highlighting how it can be used in research, making it more relevant and impactful for patients. Attendees were placed in teams and competed with each other and against the clock to solve a series of puzzles which explored how patient involvement can shape research questions, study designs, and more.

The PPI Ignite Network @ University of Galway was awarded funding from ENLIGHT (University of Galway) to fund this conference
