Engineering Maths Qualifying Examination (EMQE) for Admission in Academic Year 2026/27

The Engineering Mathematics Qualifying Exam (EMQE) is an alternative route for prospective students to meet the minimum Mathematics requirements for undertaking an Engineering degree course. It gives Leaving Certificate students a second chance to pursue an Engineering or Computer Science programme in the College of Science & Engineering, University of Galway.
The examination will take place following the release of the Leaving Certificate results (Friday 21 August 2026) and before the issue of Round Two CAO offers (7th September 2026).
Those electing to take the exam are offered a place on the preparatory course which takes place the week before the exam. The EMQE is available to students who are applying through CAO, on completion of the Leaving Certificate, and EU students who do not meet the minimum of a H4 in Maths in their Leaving Certificate/final EU school exams. The EMQE is not available to Non-EU/International Applicants. If you have a query regarding eligibility to sit the exam, please contact undergradadmissions@universityofgalway.ie

REGISTER FOR EXAM Registration Opens 21/08/26, at 10 a.m.
- Date of exam – Saturday 29th August 2026
- Time of exam - 10 am - 12 pm and 2 pm - 4 pm (all candidates sit both papers)
- Venue of exam - Room 2001, Alice Perry Engineering Building, University of Galway, Ireland
- The optional preparation course takes place fully online starting Sunday 23rd August 2026
Places available will be allocated in strict order of merit. Due to capacity constraints, it is not guaranteed that candidates who achieve a pass in the examination will receive an offer.
Admission to the School of Engineering is confined to students who satisfy both the general requirements for Matriculation in the School of Engineering and the Mathematics grade required for admission to the individual programme (H4 for BE Programmes, H7/O3 for BSc Project & Construction Management, H6/O2 for BSc Computer Science & IT).
- Candidates who satisfy the general requirements for Matriculation in the School but who have NOT attained the required Mathematics grade for their programme may apply to take the Engineering Maths Qualifying Examination held by the University.
Places available (which may vary in number year to year) will be allocated to those candidates who have achieved the points requirement for the programme that year, who satisfy the general requirements for Matriculation in the School of Engineering and who attain a Pass in the Engineering Maths Qualifying Examination.
The places available will be allocated in strict order of merit. Due to capacity constraints, it is not guaranteed that candidates who achieve a pass in the examination will receive an offer.
