Application Process
To apply, students must outline via email the reasons for requesting the loan of the laptop and for what duration it is required. Email: ComputerScience@universityofgalway.ie
Eligibility
To be eligible for a laptop, students must be registered as a full or part-time student on a University of Galway, School of Computer Science Programme at the time of application. Eligibility will be assessed on the basis of need as outlined by the applicant, prioritised as appropriate by a special-purpose committee of the School of Computer Science.
Priority will be given to new entrants, undertaking the first year of their programme. In all cases, the School of Computer Science must be satisfied that a student who receives a device under this scheme has demonstrated a genuine need (see below).
To be eligible, applicants must provide one of the following:
- A full and complete copy of the SUSI (Student Universal Support Ireland) award letter for the current academic year, showing that they are eligible for a 100% Contribution Fee; OR
- Confirm that they received funding from the Student Assistance Fund in the current academic year; OR
- Evidence that they received a means-tested DSP (Department of Social Protection) payment by providing a Department Social Protection (DEASP) statement of payments for their household for the most recent calendar year; OR
- A clear explanation for why you are unable to purchase a laptop, with specific reference to income and financial obligations, and confirming that you do not have access to an existing suitable laptop that you can use.
All information provided will be treated in strictest confidence.
Note
There may be more applicants than devices and there is no guarantee that a student's application will be successful.
Terms & Conditions of the Scheme:
- It is anticipated that successful applicants will be issued a device for either one semester or for one academic year.
- Applicants can re-apply the following year, if they are on a multi-year programme and continue to have a need.
- The device will remain the property of the School of Computer Science, University of Galway.
- Each applicant must produce their student ID card which will be photographed by a member of the School Office along with the items being loaned before they are released to the applicant.
- Students who discontinue their studies for a prolonged period for any reason, e.g., leave of absence, full withdrawal etc., are obliged to return the device prior to doing so.
- Each student is responsible for the loaned device and must commit to following the University's ICT Regulations (https://www.universityofgalway.ie/information-solutions-services/ictpolicies/ictregulations/)
