Course Descriptions Virtual (via Zoom)

The Youth Academy are delighted to offer fully virtual programmes in Spring for those who might not be able to travel weekly to University of Galway. Our courses provide primary school students with fun, interactive, educational courses where they can make new friends, learn new things from University educators, and get to exerience a unique learning experience. 

Format of Virtual Courses

1. Pre-recorded videos: We will have pre-recorded lectures and video tutorials available for your child in advance of the weekly zoom calls. Your child must view and complete the various exercises/activities in their own time, before the weekly calls.

2. Weekly Zoom calls: As our courses are online our courses will consist of  Zoom calls with the instructor and fellow students. These calls will take place weekly for the six week programme and last 80-90 minutes each. These calls will be interactive and there will be up to 12 students in each class.

Please see below our Virtual Spring 2024 courses. Students attend one course for the six week programme. No prior knowledge of any of the subjects is necessary. 

Biomedical Engineering: A Journey Through Our Body, the Marvelous Machine

Calling all young innovators and problem solvers! Are you curious about how engineering can shape the human body's incredible systems? Join us on this 6-week journey into the marvelous machine that is our human body!

Throughout this course, we'll blend engaging hands-on activities so you can discover the engineering behind our human body to; (1) understand the human heart, (2) explore the secrets of the nervous system and (3) discover the mechanics behind our musculoskeletal system. Once you learn how you can apply your problem-solving skills to design lifesaving medical devices, you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve! Buckle up and get ready to think like a biomedical engineer, as we embark on this journey through our body, the marvelous machine.

Digital Media Design

We will explore where the creative mind meets the business mind in this hands-on digital media design course. Together, we will learn why and how we can create digital media assets like posters and videos using easy-to-use digital editing tools. The course aims to build confidence, promote teamwork, and develop essential skills that will be useful in future school projects, right through to future careers. It is a fun and educational pathway that prepares students for any career that requires digital media expertise.

 At the end of the six-week course, students will be able to:

  • Understand the principles of graphic design.
  • Use graphic design software to create posters.
  • Understand storyboarding for video production.
  • Plan and create their own videos.
  • Learn how to use collaborative video editing software.
  • Learn the fundamentals of digital marketing.
  • Develop teamwork skills through collaborative projects.
  • Build confidence in digital tools.

The course will stimulate creativity and imagination while also providing practical skills that can be used in real-world applications for their future educational and career needs.
