Take a virtual tour of campus

Computer simulation experts RealSim, a company based here on campus, are developing a 3D virtual model of the University for the Buildings Office.

Click on the video below for a bird's-eye-view tour of the campus.

Part-funded by the Galway University Foundation, the model was developed from a combination of surveys, aerial imaging, façade photography and 3D wireframe models. The campus model is exceptionally realistic and, using gaming technology, can create realtime shadows and effects. It allows users to change the time of day, weather conditions and even the flow of the river Corrib.

The model's uses are endless, but it was initially developed for a number of important buildings and estates management purposes including;
- a master planning tool for the campus environment
- visualisation of new buildings for donors
- trialling new building forms with architectural teams
- demonstrating building impact for the City Planners
- campus orientation and wayfinding
- presentations, marketing and communications
- potential for flood level assessments
- event management
- security, traffic and pedestrian travel planning
- emergency response and management tool

It is a good example of Units 'leveraging I.T.' in conjunction with local entrepreneurs to develop time-saving and innovative tools for management. We hope that in the fullness of time, this model can be used for a wide variety of purposes across the campus.
