Accessibility & Language2026 Kevin O'Byrne Memorial Lecture
Kevin O'Byrne graduated from UCG in 1955 with a first-class honours degree in civil engineering before leaving Ireland in 1958 to help found Strathmore College – now Strathmore University, East Africa's first multi-racial institution of higher learning.
He went on to design landmark structures across Nairobi and Kampala while shaping Strathmore's academic and community foundations as a lecturer, trustee, and coach over five decades.
A talented rugby player who previously represented UCG and Connacht, he continued his athletic career after emigrating, earning representative honors for East Africa and Kenya while helping embed the sport into the fabric of Strathmore College.
Join us in the Michael D. Higgins Auditorium as we trace his journey from Galway to Kenya, mark the launch of the Kevin O'Byrne STEM Complex being built in his honour, and explore opportunities for continued partnership between Ireland and Strathmore in engineering, technology, and innovation.
