Commerce with Gaeilge
Course Overview
The BComm (Gaeilge) has been introduced following demand from students for a programme that combines the study of Business and the Irish Language. This is a four-year degree programme in Commerce including the study of the Irish Language, allowing students to develop their language skills while gaining valuable insights into business and culture.
It is the ideal qualification for students who want to build a career in business or who simply wish to expand their career choices. A great advantage that students studying this course have is that in year three the programme is divided between a one-semester internship in an Irish-speaking environment and a semester studying at NUI Galway’s Gaeltacht campus in an Cheathrú Rua.
All business subjects are taught through English.

Glossary of Terms
- Credits
- You must earn a defined number of credits (aka ECTS) to complete each year of your course. You do this by taking all of its required modules as well as the correct number of optional modules to obtain that year's total number of credits.
- Module
- An examinable portion of a subject or course, for which you attend lectures and/or tutorials and carry out assignments. E.g. Algebra and Calculus could be modules within the subject Mathematics. Each module has a unique module code eg. MA140.
- Subject
- Some courses allow you to choose subjects, where related modules are grouped together. Subjects have their own required number of credits, so you must take all that subject's required modules and may also need to obtain the remainder of the subject's total credits by choosing from its available optional modules.
- Optional
- A module you may choose to study.
- Required
- A module that you must study if you choose this course (or subject).
- Required Core Subject
- A subject you must study because it's integral to that course.
- Semester
- Most courses have 2 semesters (aka terms) per year, so a three-year course will have six semesters in total. For clarity, this page will refer to the first semester of year 2 as 'Semester 3'.

Work Placement
The work experience in an Irish speaking environment is central to the programme and is a continuous learning process where the learner aims to use the information and skills acquired in the first two years of the programme. The work experience will give the learner the opportunity to taste life in a real work environment and there will be a correlation between the work experience and the learner's area of study. Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge will organise the work experience in conjunction with Údarás na Gaeltachta. Údarás na Gaeltachta has 400 client companies, in various sectors – including biomedicine and pharmacology, ICT, niche manufacturing, audio visual and digital media, tourism, fish processing and aquaculture, renewable energy, food processing and arts and crafts – the students will be based in the Údarás headquarters or in one of these client companies.
Gaeltacht Semester
Students will spend a full semester studying in Áras Mháirtín Uí Chadhain, a NUI Galway centre in an Cheathrú Rua. They will study six modules in this Gaeltacht environment, and blended learning will form the basis for some of the modules whilst a more traditional approach will be used in other modules. ‘Inniúlachtaí Gairme’ or Professional Competencies is a module that will prepare the students to confidently undertake a period of work experience after the Gaeltacht semester.
Students of the BComm le Gaeilge will be entitled to the accommodation allowance provided by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, and this, along with a contribution from Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge, will allow them to stay with host families (full accommodation and meals) for the 12 weeks of the semester at a cost of just €420 per student.
Irish Teaching Council Requirements
This degree is designed to allow graduates to teach both business related subjects and Gaeilge at second level once they have acquired a teaching qualification and meet the Teaching Council’s subject specific requirements.

What Our Students Say

Amy Hardiman | Customer Service & Sales Adviser at Aviva
I chose the course as business and Irish were my favourite subjects in school. This year I spent a semester studying in the Acadamh, an Cheathrú Rua and living in the Connemara Gaeltacht, a unique aspect of B.Comm le Gaeilge. This was very beneficial in improving my Irish as I was learning in a natural environment outside the classroom. I spent second semester on work experience through the medium of Irish. In my opinion the opportunity to do this is the biggest advantage of this course as I learned lots of new skills for the world of work. Another benefit of this course is that it only accepts a small number of students therefore it is easy to make new friends for life.

Hayley Ní Thuathail | Final Year Student
I have enjoyed being immersed in the Irish language and I’ve grown up around successful business people so I wanted to gain a vast amount of information for working within a business and promote and keep the Irish language progressing. I have enjoyed learning about all the aspects of business and found that marketing has a huge role to play in todays business world. My ability has grown regarding with using the Irish language and this will help me going forward in the work place as I am very confident using the language. I was prepared for the working world as I was able to apply a lot of things that I had learned over the course of my studies.

Kayleigh Laffey | Digital Marketing and E-Commerce Executive at Caseys Furnitu
I chose to study the B.Comm le Gaeilge as I’ve always wanted to continue the use of Irish throughout third level education and onto my professional career. Having not attended a Gaelscoil, I was worried that I’d struggle with the Irish aspect of the course, but I found there was a happy medium between both Irish and English modules. Taking classes with the general B.Comm group for business modules gave us the opportunity to mix with others. Immersing our small group in a Irish language environment in third year, both with a semester studying in Connemara and a semester work placement in an Irish business environment, has really prepared me for my final year and the working world.
