Biography & Research Interests

Mariam Yiwere received her Bachelor of Science degree from the Department of Computer Science at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana in 2012, after which she served as a teaching assistant for the 2012/2013 academic year.  She received her Master of Engineering degree and her PhD degree in computer Engineering from the department of Computer Engineering, Hanbat National University, South Korea in August 2015 and February 2020 respectively.  
Since October 2020, Mariam has been working on the DTIF/DAVID project as a postdoctoral researcher at the College of Science and Engineering, National University of Ireland, Galway, and her research interests include Text-to-Speech Synthesis, Speaker Recognition and Verification, Sound Source Localization, Deep Learning and Computer Vision. 

Research Activities

Speaker Verification/Recognition for Children: I am currently training neural network models to recognize unique individuals based on variable length (text-independent) speech signals. Expressive Text-to-Speech (TTS) Synthesis.
Expressive Text-to-Speech Synthesis: I am also working on generating synthetic human voices with expressivity/emotion. The goal is to generate voices that can express basic emotions, such as happiness, sadness and anger, while still expressing meaningful and natural linguistic content.
Child speech Data Collection: To facilitate experiments in the DTIF/DAVID Project, I gather publicly available child and emotional speech datasets, and I harvested some child speech data from the public domain online (e.g. YouTube).
