CELT Seminar Series Semester 2 2025/2026

CELT hosts regular seminars during term time on a variety of topics, sharing practice, introducing new ideas, promoting services, and highlighting topical issues. These hybrid sessions interleave discussions about teaching and learning with technology-focused overviews, and provide a mix of internal, national and international perspectives.

The one hour sessions are generally held on a Thursday 12-1 and have both in person and remote attendance options. This semester session 2, February 12th, will take place 10-11 online only and session 7, March 26th, will also be online only.

Through this series, we aim to establish a forum in which people can share and discuss ideas with one another, and learn about what's happening across the university and beyond.

Feb 5th: A renaissance in laboratory education

Michael Seery, University of Bristol

Abstract

Over the last decade, a substantial amount of research on learning in the laboratory has been conducted, and we can a lot of insight into what kinds of approaches foster learning in laboratory settings.* Furthermore, it is increasingly common to consider laboratory curriculum design from a programmatic perspective, and discourse about laboratory education has flourished, moving on from a dichotomy of “recipe or not” to a more holistic consideration of student learning over the course of their studies. A key prompt for faculty is to consider what it is they want the laboratory curriculum to achieve, and why the laboratory is a unique place for those goals. In this talk I share some highlights from the literature of the last decade and what we can learn from it, some case studies from practice, as well as some prompts to consider for laboratory curriculum design.
