Research in Classics at the University of Galway

Hardiman Research Building

We have a thriving and dynamic research community in Classics at NUI Galway, many of whom are based in the state-of-the-art Hardiman Research Building (above), located adjacent to the Library in the centre of campus.

Research areas

We have particular strengths in the following research areas:

  • The Latin tradition (Antiquity to Middle Ages): manuscript transmission; Hiberno-Latin; Latin education; scientific texts; glosses, glossaries and scholia.
  • Cross-cultural encounters: identity and ethnicity; archaeology of pre- and early Roman Italy; multilingualism and code-switching; Latin and vernacular languages; the heroic tradition.
  • Digital Humanities: digital editions, catalogues and databases.
