Overview
Thinking of starting your own business, freelancing, or growing a side hustle into something more substantial? This 5 ECTS micro-credential gives you a practical grounding in the key areas of Irish business law you need to trade confidently and avoid costly mistakes. You will learn how the Irish legal system works, what makes a contract legally binding, and the core rules for business agreements such as supply, sale of goods and employment contracts. Using real-world examples and short problem scenarios, you will see how legal rules apply to everyday commercial decisions.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should be over 21 years. A Level 7 qualification or equivalent is required.

This course is ideal for:

No prior legal study is required; the course is designed for beginners and delivered in an accessible, practice-focused way.
You will build transferable skills in legal reasoning, problem-solving and clear written communication – all highly valued in commercial settings.
How you will learn
The course is delivered fully online and is structured to fit around work and other commitments.
- Short, focused readings and an electronic course pack introducing each topic.
- Pre-recorded podcasts and slides that walk through key concepts step-by-step.
- Live online sessions (via Zoom/Canvas) for Q&A, problem-solving and exam skills support.
- Structured self-assessment questions and discussion boards so you can test your understanding and learn from peers.
Assessment and workload
Business Law I is assessed entirely by continuous assessment; there is no final exam. Typical assessments include:
- An online multiple-choice quiz to check your understanding of foundational topics.
- A short writing assignment to develop your legal writing skills.
- Two problem-based written assignments where you analyse realistic business scenarios and advise on the legal position.
As a 5 ECTS micro-credential, you should expect approximately 100–125 hours of total learner effort, including online sessions, independent study and assignment preparation.
