Why Choose This Course?
Course Information
Who is this course for?
The MSc in Applied Psychology is designed to offer an advance understanding of core topics and skills in psychology and how they are applied to real-world settings. The course is ideal for graduates of PSI-accredited undergraduate psychology degrees (or equivalent) and is particularly relevant to students aiming to learn more about key professional areas of psychology.
A unique element of the MSc in Applied Psychology is the opportunity to learn how to use evidence synthesis methods, like scoping reviews and systematic reviews, to inform decision-making by policymakers and practitioners across diverse contexts. Students will use these methods to conduct an evidence synthesis dissertation where they answer industry specific questions from our community partners.
What will I study?
The 1-year full-time programme where students take a mix of core and elective modules across the year and will conduct a research synthesis dissertation.
Core modules:
- Advanced Research Methods

Optional Modules* may include:
- Clinical and Experimental Cognitive Neuroscience
- Applications of Behavioural Psychology
- Health Promotion and Behaviour Change

- Improve communication skills: Learn to effectively present and articulate findings to a range of audiences, from stakeholders to decision-makers.
With a focus on real-world applications, the MSc in Applied Psychology prepares graduates for a career in psychology and roles where psychological research skills and critical thinking are valued.
Skills in evidence synthesis (such as scoping and systematic reviews) are fundamental for psychology graduates working in policy and practice nationally and internationally. The research synthesis dissertation will equip graduates with the knowledge and experience of working with non-academic partners (e.g., NGOs, government agencies, charities) to answer important questions relevant to policy, service use and interventions.
Graduates will also be in a strong position for further study in the professional areas of psychology such as Clinical Psychology, Educational Psychology and Applied Behaviour Analysis. The MSc in Applied Psychology is ideal for graduates of PSI-accredited undergraduate psychology degrees (or equivalent) as it provides a supportive pathway to gaining work as an Assistant Psychologist, a Research Assistant, or in similar roles in the public sector, the community sector, or in industry.
The MSc in Applied Psychology combines innovative teaching methods with practical, hands-on learning to ensure a comprehensive educational experience. You will learn through a mix of interactive lectures, seminars and workshops led by expert faculty with experience across diverse areas of psychology.
Group projects and collaborative activities will enhance your teamwork and communication skills, while individual assignments and the final dissertation will help you develop independence and critical thinking.
Throughout the programme, you will have access to cutting-edge resources, including industry-standard software and real-world datasets, to support your learning and professional growth
How Will I Be Assessed?

Q. I did Psychology as part of my undergraduate degree but it was not a Bachelor of Science, can I take this course?
If you studied psychology as part of your undergraduate degree and you would like to continue to the MSc Applied Psychology, you will need to have a degree which is accredited by the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) – this can be a BA or a BSc. If your degree was not accredited by the PSI, the HDip Psychology (Conversion) is a one-year, full-time programme designed for students who have completed the BA in Psychological Studies at University of Galway, or its equivalent in other universities. By combining the HDipPsych (Conversion) with the BA with Psychological Studies or its equivalent, you will have covered the course content equivalent to that of University of Galway’s BSc in Psychology programme. Once you have this accreditation, you will be able to apply for the MSc in Applied Psychology.
Applicants who do not have the required academic qualifications for entry purposes, but have relevant work experience in applied psychology or related fields, may also be entitled to apply under the University’s Recognition of Prior Learning Policy. Further, students may apply for exemption(s) from some programme courses based on equivalent courses already completed. Further information is available on the University’s Recognition of Prior Learning website

How to demonstrate equivalence to an undergraduate degree accredited by the Psychological Society of Ireland?

2. The degree should include a relatively broad range of psychology courses including the core curriculum components of:

Applicants must demonstrate research competence in practical work and in the completion of a supervised empirical research project.
