Armed Conflict, Humanitarian Law and International Justice Research Cluster
Armed Conflict, Humanitarian Law and International Justice Research Cluster

Cluster Leader
The Armed Conflict, Humanitarian Law and International Justice Research Cluster is a focal point for legal research at University of Galway addressed to situations of war and conflict, and their aftermath. The cluster brings together academic staff and PhD researchers working in the fields of international humanitarian law, peace operations, human rights in conflict, and international criminal justice. Researchers contribute to academic scholarship in these fields and are active in addressing legal and policy debates on a range of key questions. Members of the cluster are engaged in research addressed to both historic and contemporary conflicts, including those in Ukraine, Iraq, Palestine, Uganda, Lebanon, Ireland, Syria, Kosovo, Colombia, Sri Lanka, Bosnia and Turkey. Cluster members regularly lend their expertise to policy discussions and collaborate with United Nations bodies, national authorities, international and regional organisations, and civil society groups (e.g. European Union Assistance Mission Ukraine, Irish Red Cross, Department of Foreign Affairs, Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation, Al-Haq, United Nations Special Rapporteurs and Irish Rule of Law International).
Research topics include the role of international courts in situations of war and conflict, sexual and gender-based violence, protection of the natural environment, the judicial development of international humanitarian law, the evolution of United Nations peacekeeping, trafficking in armed conflict, regulation of technology and artificial intelligence, and post-conflict accountability for war crimes and other international crimes. Cluster members are actively engaged in the Summer School on the International Criminal Court, an annual programme at University of Galway delivered by leading international lawyers, judges and experts to a global audience of attendees. There are regular seminars during the academic year by visiting experts and practitioners. Previous conferences have included: Corporations and Armed Conflict: The Role of International Law (2010) and Civil Wars and International Law; The Irish Civil War 1922-23 and the Evolving Laws of War (2023).
