Business and Human Rights Research Cluster

Cluster Leader

Professor Shane Darcy

The Business and Human Rights Research Cluster at the Irish Centre for Human Rights explores the role of human rights and international law in addressing corporate responsibility and accountability for harmful activities. Research within the cluster contributes to legal and policy debates on a range of key questions arising in the business and human rights domain. Cluster members lend their expertise to policy discussions concerning business and human rights nationally and internationally through research and engagement with civil society organisations, public bodies, Government and the United Nations.

Research outputs have included journal article publications and policy-oriented research reports exploring national and international dimensions of the business and human rights agenda. The annual Symposium on Business and Human Rights at University of Galway has been a forum for engagement by experts and practitioners from the United Nations, international organisations, civil society, the private sector and public bodies. Cluster members have contributed frequently to the Business and Human Rights in Ireland blog and other online fora. Civil society organisations and public bodies that have been engaged include the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission, the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trócaire, Amnesty International and the Irish Coalition for Business and Human Rights. Professor Shane Darcy has served as the University of Galway representative on the Department of Foreign Affairs Business and Human Rights Implementation Group. The Business and Human Rights cluster convenes seminars during the academic year by visiting experts and practitioners.
