Study Abroad

The School does not currently operate an active inbound or outbound Study Abroad programme.

We are reviewing and developing potential international relationships with institutions where there is strong academic alignment and realistic scope for future student mobility.

There are currently no school-specific Study Abroad places available for visiting international Nursing or Midwifery students.

Similarly, University of Galway Nursing and Midwifery students should not make plans for an overseas Study Abroad period unless a specific opportunity has been formally communicated by the School.

Any future opportunities, participating institutions and application arrangements will be published once they have been formally agreed.

Developing Future Opportunities

International mobility in Nursing and Midwifery can be more complex than in programmes without professional or clinical components.

As the School develops new international relationships, potential opportunities must be assessed against factors including:

• academic and curriculum compatibility;
• programme structures and academic calendars;
• professional and regulatory requirements;
• clinical placement capacity and supervision requirements;
• health screening, vaccination and vetting requirements where relevant;
• academic credit and recognition;
• student support and welfare;
• reciprocity between institutions; and
• the long-term sustainability of the partnership.

Future models may include short term academic/clinical practice Study Abroad, shorter international learning experiences, collaborative academic activities and other curriculum-based opportunities that can be appropriately integrated into Nursing and Midwifery education.

Not every future partnership will necessarily involve clinical placement. In many cases, academic or other non-clinical forms of international learning may provide a more appropriate and sustainable model.

The School is therefore focusing on developing a smaller number of active, academically aligned and sustainable relationships, rather than expanding Study Abroad opportunities on an open basis.

For interested International University Partners

The School of Nursing, Midwifery & Evidence Science is interested in developing international relationships with universities and healthcare education institutions where there is strong academic alignment and clear potential for sustainable collaboration.

We welcome exploratory conversations with institutions interested in developing future student mobility or other forms of international academic engagement.

In considering potential partnerships, we are particularly interested in opportunities that demonstrate:

• strong alignment between academic programmes and areas of educational interest;
• a clear benefit for students at both institutions;
• potential for reciprocal or mutually valuable activity;
• realistic compatibility between programme structures and academic calendars;
• an appropriate approach to professional and clinical requirements; and
• scope for the relationship to develop beyond a single student exchange.

Potential collaboration could include Study Abroad, short-term academic experiences, curriculum-based international learning and wider academic engagement between our institutions.

All prospective arrangements are subject to academic review and the relevant University approval processes. An exploratory partnership discussion does not constitute an available Study Abroad place for students.
