Podiatric Medicine Clinic

at the Galway Science & Technology Festival      Staff Lead(s):

Olga Carey, Lecturer Podiatric Medicine, Dr.Maureen Kelly, CMNHS

Purpose:

A Podiatry Clinic was set up at The Teddy Bears Hospital as an opportunity to show what podiatrists do and increase public awareness of the scope of practice of the podiatric medicine profession and the Podiatric Medicine education available at NUIG. A fun, interactive clinic environment was set up encouraging the kids attending the Science Fair to listen to the blood flow in their lower legs and feet – “The Beat in Their Feet”, make a carbon copy of their footprint and learn about how the blood flows around their body and gain an understanding of the importance of keeping your feet healthy. The relaxed and fun environment aimed to make kids and their parents more comfortable and less intimidated in a clinical setting and reduce the anxiety some people experience when meeting health professionals.

Impact:

An estimated 600 children and their parents passed through the Podiatry Clinic and participated in the activities offered. There was a very positive response from kids and parents. It was a wonderful, fun day and a great opportunity to educate the families of Galway about what podiatry has to offer and the podiatric education available in NUIG as well as alleviating any fears kids may have around engaging with health professionals.
