Modules are the smallest quanity of learning in a course. A module will have an assigned number of ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits. In the University of Galway the smallest number of credits assigned to a module will be 5 ECTS credits though modules can also be multiples of that. ECTS credits give a general indication of the workload associated with the module. For example, a module worth 5 ECTS will usually take 100 - 125 hours of learning effort to complete. A module worth 10 ECTS credits will be double that i.e. 200- 250 hours. 

Each module will have its own learning outcomes and assessment methods. A combination of modules makes up a course.

Learning outcomes are defined as clear statements of what a learner is expected to know, understand and/or be able to demonstrate after completion of a process of learning. Module level learning outcomes will be specific to the learning taking place in a particular module.
