Course Information
The core focus of the BA in Film & Digital Media is the development of students’ creative and critical skills, positioning graduates to become content creators across a range of media platforms and giving them the entrepreneurial skills and flexibility required to work in today’s rapidly changing media environment. This course provides a comprehensive grounding in the theory and history of film and digital media as well as training in film practice, screenwriting, and digital development and design.
This course prepares graduates for a career in the broad field of the creative industries, including film and television production, digital content creation, cultural administration, screenwriting and digital marketing. It also offers clear opportunities to pursue further study and research at postgraduate level, including the MA programme at the Huston MA in Film Studies: Theory and Practice.

Glossary of Terms
- Credits
- You must earn a defined number of credits (aka ECTS) to complete each year of your course. You do this by taking all of its required modules as well as the correct number of optional modules to obtain that year's total number of credits.
- Module
- An examinable portion of a subject or course, for which you attend lectures and/or tutorials and carry out assignments. E.g. Algebra and Calculus could be modules within the subject Mathematics. Each module has a unique module code eg. MA140.
- Subject
- Some courses allow you to choose subjects, where related modules are grouped together. Subjects have their own required number of credits, so you must take all that subject's required modules and may also need to obtain the remainder of the subject's total credits by choosing from its available optional modules.
- Optional
- A module you may choose to study.
- Required
- A module that you must study if you choose this course (or subject).

- A subject you must study because it's integral to that course.

Our BA Film & Digital Media opens doors to exciting careers in Ireland and beyond. Many graduates go on to work in the film and creative industry, where they use their practical skills in areas such as direction, screenwriting, camera and lighting, creative technologies, special effects and content creation.
With their analytical abilities, they are also suited to work in a diverse range of areas related to the creative industries including UI/UX researcher, social media marketing, cultural administration, along with clear opportunities to pursue further study and research at postgraduate level.
As part of your third year, you have the option to complete a work placement with a media company, NGO or non-profit enterprise so as to apply knowledge and skills obtained in their studies in a practice environment. Students will reflect on their practice through assessed work.

The BA Global Languages is designed to develop students’ proficiency in multiple languages while fostering cultural awareness, critical thinking and analytical skills. The learning experience is dynamic, combining theoretical knowledge with practical application to prepare students for global careers.
How Will I Learn?
- Cultural Studies - Modules on film, digital culture, society and other related field help students understand all aspects of the creative industries through a theoretical lense.
- Practice-Based - Practical modules on the technical aspects of filmmaking and postproduction processes allow students to get hands on experience with industry standard camera, sound and lighting equipment and professional media software.
- ERASMUS - A semester abroad allows students to experience full language immersion and cultural exchange.
- Interdisciplinary Approach - This method uses input from a number of academic disciplines allowing students to broaden their career opportunities.
How Will I Be Assessed?
- Continuous Assessment - Regular coursework, including essays, presentations and in-class tests. Students receive regular (weekly) feedback on their progress.
- Examinations - Written exams take place before Christmas and in May. Written and oral exams evaluate proficiency in grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, and communication.
- Project Work - Filmmaking and production assignment allow students to apply their skills in real-world contexts.
- Work Placement - Students are assessed based on their practical and reflective engagement with their work placement.
- Study Abroad - The Semester Abroad in Year 3 is assessed entirely on a pass/fail basis. Students generally attain 30 credits in their host university.

Q: Are there any progression restrictions if I choose Psychology as one of my subjects?
A: Students of the BA (Joint-Honours) Programme who successfully complete Psychology at First Arts may proceed to Second Arts with the subject Psychological Studies and one other of the subjects completed at First Arts. Places are limited to 100 on academic merit in Psychology from the 1st Sittings in Semester 1 and 2 and you must have passed your other three academic subjects (40% or above) to be considered.
Accreditations & Awards
Film & Digital Media at University of Galway is a unique and open-ended course combining film theory, cinema culture and practical film work. By watching and discussing films of all types and ages, students progress from the basics to advanced concepts, creative ideas, and critical analysis. Digital Media complements this with animation, video production, and modern media studies. With its strong mix of theory, hands-on practice, and industry insight, I highly recommend this course to anyone passionate about cinema and eager to develop the skills needed for a successful career in the industry.

Entry Requirements and Fees
Minimum Entry Requirements
Minimum Grade H5 in two subjects and passes in four other subjects at O6/H7 Level in the Leaving Certificate, including Irish, English, Mathematics, a laboratory science subject (i.e., Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Physics with Chemistry (joint), Agricultural Science or Computer Science) or Technology, and any two other subjects recognised for entry purposes. Additional requirements: Minimum H4 in Mathematics or, alternatively, obtain a pass in the Engineering Maths Qualifying Exam (held in the University).
Additional Requirements
Students must obtain a minimum of Grade H4 in the Higher Level Leaving Certificate paper in Mathematics or, alternatively places available (which may vary in number year to year) may be allocated to candidates who have achieved the points requirement for the programme that year, and who attain a Pass in the Engineering Maths Qualifying Examination. The places available will be allocated in strict order of merit based points attained in the Leaving Certificate. Due to capacity constraints, not all candidates who achieve a pass in the examination may receive an offer.

Terence O’Malley DLA Piper Scholarship
University of Galway is delighted to partner with global law firm DLA Piper for the Terence O’Malley DLA Piper Scholarship. The scholarship, which is named after Terry O’Malley, Chairman Emeritus (US), will provide funding to support students in financial need studying at University of Galway School of Law.
The Scholarship will support the successful Scholar throughout their degree to a minimum value of €7,500. The Scholarship is open to applicants who have made a formal application through the Central Applications Office for a first year place on one of the full-time undergraduate designated programmes of study in University of Galway School of Law.
