Why Choose This Course?
Course Information
In Year One, you'll select three subjects from a range of 23 subjects, grouped into 7 subject areas. When considering what subjects to pick, start with what interests you. Perhaps you might choose a subject you love studying at school, a subject that aligns with your future career goals or maybe one you’ve never tried before. Take some time to explore your options by clicking on the subject links below. While you can only select one subject per subject group, the structure of the course offers a multitude of different subject combinations.
In Year Two, you will continue with two of these three subjects. There are a small number of subjects that have specific progression requirements from Year 1 to Year 2. These are:
- Psychology Progression: Students who complete Psychology in First Year may progress to either the BSc (Psychology) programme (15 places available) or continue with Psychological Studies (100 places). Selection is based on academic merit from first-year results, requiring a minimum average of 40% in each subject.
- Law Progression: Entry to Second Year Law (continuing with Law as one of your two subjects in the BA Joint Honours) is limited to 100 students and is based on academic performance in First Year, with students needing to pass the First Arts exam outright (average of 40% or higher in each subject).
- Mathematics Progression: Based on module selection in Year 1, students will progress to either higher level Mathematics or Mathematical Studies in Year Two. Find out more information here Mathematics and Mathematical Studies. To continue Mathematical Studies, students must achieve 45% in Mathematics in First Year. For Mathematics (honours), students need at least 60% and a pass in module MA186, ideally having studied higher-level Leaving Cert Mathematics.
If you studying a European language you will spend Year 3 studying abroad. If you are studying Gaeilge, your Year 3 will consist of one semester in the Gaeltacht, and one on a work placement in the Irish language sector. You will return in Year 4 to study your two subjects and gain your degree.
If you are not studying a language subject, you will progress to final year in Year 3 with your two subjects. There are some very limited opportunities to study abroad at a partner university that teaches in English that are highly competitive for students not taking a language. However if you know that you want to study abroad but do not wish to study a language subject, explore the BA (Global Experience) that has a study abroad year for all students in Year 3.

- If you're taking two languages, you’ll typically spend an academic year abroad in one country and complete a summer placement in the other.
- If you're studying Gaeilge, you’ll spend your third year off-campus: one semester in the Gaeltacht, and one on a work placement in the Irish language sector.
- Finally, if you are studying Gaeilge with another European language you will split third year between study abroad and a semester in the Gaelteacht.

Glossary of Terms
- Credits
- You must earn a defined number of credits (aka ECTS) to complete each year of your course. You do this by taking all of its required modules as well as the correct number of optional modules to obtain that year's total number of credits.
- Module
- An examinable portion of a subject or course, for which you attend lectures and/or tutorials and carry out assignments. E.g. Algebra and Calculus could be modules within the subject Mathematics. Each module has a unique module code eg. MA140.
- Subject
- Some courses allow you to choose subjects, where related modules are grouped together. Subjects have their own required number of credits, so you must take all that subject's required modules and may also need to obtain the remainder of the subject's total credits by choosing from its available optional modules.
- Optional
- A module you may choose to study.
- Required
- A module that you must study if you choose this course (or subject).
- Required Core Subject
- A subject you must study because it's integral to that course.
- Semester
- Most courses have 2 semesters (aka terms) per year, so a three-year course will have six semesters in total. For clarity, this page will refer to the first semester of year 2 as 'Semester 3'.

This is your chance to boost your language skills, explore new cultures, and grow in confidence - all while living in another country!
- If you’re studying Gaeilge along with a European language, you’ll spend one semester in the Gaeltacht and the other on Erasmus, studying in a country where your second language is spoken.
- If you’re studying two European languages, you can choose from these options:
- Spend a full academic year on Erasmus in one country, plus at least 12 weeks in the other.
- Split the year between one semester in each country on Erasmus.
How Your Study Abroad Will Shape Your Future:
By the end of your year abroad, you’ll have:
- Learned to speak with confidence - improved your fluency in real-life situations.
- Gained a deeper understanding of different cultures and seen the world from a new perspective.
- Learned how to learn languages and become more independent in your studies.
- Gained life skills from navigating a new city to making international friends.
- Discovered more about yourself and how your own culture fits into the bigger picture.
This year is all about adventure, independence and setting yourself up for an exciting global career. Are you ready?
Students who have studied Psychological Studies as one of their two subjects to degree level can apply to the Higher Diploma Psychology (Conversion) Psychology. By combining the one year HDipPsych (Conversion) with the BA with Psychological Studies, students will have covered the course content equivalent to that of University of Galway’s BSc in Psychology programme.
The HDipPsychology (Conversion) in combination with course content covered by the University of Galway Psychological Studies degree is accredited by the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI). As such, the course satisfies the requirements specified by PSI for graduate status in Psychology. Each individual subject in the BA (Joint-Honours) will be assessed separately. Assessments vary from module to module, but you can expect to have a mix of essays and written assignments, in-class presentations and group assignments, as well as some written examinations.
At the beginning of each module, you will receive a module outline which will detail the learning outcomes, the assessment methods and even the recommended study hours so that you can be prepared for what to expect from each subject.
