New research led by Geography PhD student Elena Aitova was published in the journal Land MDPI: “Immediate Impact of Rewetting on Carbon Dynamics in a Degraded Irish Raised Bog.” The study investigated the immediate impact of rewetting on CO₂ and CH₄ emissions over a three-year period at Irish raised bog and found that rewetting led to an immediate reduction in carbon emissions, even in the more degraded areas. The study highlights that expanding restoration to include undesignated domestic peat extraction bogs represents a cost-effective strategy to reduce emissions from degraded peatlands in the near term.
This work was carried out as part of the Care-Peat project, funded under Interreg North-West Europe (NWE) in partnership with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). Open access: https://www.mdpi.com/2073-445X/14/11/2226
