Thematic Evaluation of Gender Equality in International Development
Over a two-years period, Dr Una Murray worked with the Independent Office for Evaluation of the UN agency IFAD (International Fund for Agricultural Development), to assess its efforts in promoting gender equality and empowerment. IFAD operates in developing and fragile contexts, particularly in remote rural areas where poverty and hunger are most severe, across five regions and 92 countries. The thematic evaluation drew on a broad evidence base, including 11 country case studies, comparisons with the work of 8 international organisations, detailed review of corporate reports, a synthesis of recent evaluations, survey responses from 700 IFAD stakeholders and over 300 interviews. The resulting thematic evaluation report offers recommendations to strengthen IFAD’s work in tackling the root causes of gender inequality through both their projects and non-lending activities.
