Who Can Study Abroad

Who can study abroad?

(i) Language students
A Year Abroad is an integral and compulsory part of the BA Global Languages degree.  If you are a BA International student studying a continental language, you will generally be expected to spend an academic year attending a university abroad or doing a teaching assistantship.  In the case of both of these programmes, your language department coordinator(s) will talk to you in Second Year about possible host universities, and the destination to which you are assigned may depend on your other degree subject(s) and the availability of suitable modules therein at any given host institution.  Students who are taking two languages may have an option to spend an Erasmus semester in each of two countries, enabling them to spend an extended period in the environment where each language is spoken.

(ii) Non-language students
If you are a BA Joint Honours student who is not studying a continental language, it is also possible to study abroad. We have a number of Erasmus partner universities that offer courses through the medium of English. Eligible students will be invited to apply for available Erasmus places in January.  Successful applicants will spend a full year studying their two degree subjects abroad, and will be expected to secure 20 ECTS in approved courses in each of those subjects (that's 40 ECTS in total) in order to pass the year. Students should note, however, that the options in this regard may be limited for Joint Honours students, and the best pathway for a non-language student who wishes to study abroad is the BA Global experience  (see below).

NEWS: There will be an information event for 2nd Year Joint Honours students on Tuesday, 24th January, 2023 at 6pm in the Fottrell Theatre.  Students who are not studying a continental language are invited to come along and find out more about studying abroad for a year through the medium of English. 
The strict deadline for study abroad applications will be Monday, 6th February at 12 noon. The application system will close at this time and late submissions will not be possible.  Please note that for University of Richmond (USA) there will be an earlier deadline, to be announced.  See University of Richmond Factsheet 2023/24.

(iii) Other programmes
Some other College of Arts programmes provide the option of a semester abroad, and the relevant Programme Directors will advise.

(iv) BA Global Experience
The BA (Global Experience) is our flagship international programme that offers all its students an international experience in Year Three, whether or not they are studying continental languages.
BA Global Experience students who are studying one or more continental languages will receive information about their Year Abroad options from the relevant Language Disciplines.
BA Global Experience students who are not taking continental languages will be contacted in early November by the College's Mobility Officer, Mary Lyons, about their options for studying abroad, and the processes involved.
