NUI Galway's Ukrainian Response

To the citizens of Ukraine, we wish to express our support for you during this time of terrible suffering and uncertainty and, as a University, we are working to find ways to assist you. We welcome the Irish governments decision to lift visa requirements for Ukrainian citizens. We are currently waiting for further guidance from our Government in relation to how we can support you as students, academics and researchers to continue your studies and work while you are here in Ireland. Once we have more information about the Governments co-ordinated approach to offering you supports and opportunities we will get in touch with you to guide you through the next steps. I am a Ukrainian university student arriving in Ireland and I would like to continue my studies? 

 We are working with the Irish government to set up a system which will allow you to apply to transfer to study with us here at NUI Galway. At the moment were are gathering basic information and will get back in contact with you when the transfer process has been established. 

You can register you interest in transfer to study with us here. 

You will be treated as an EU national, meaning that the EU rate of fee will apply, and you may be eligible for further supports such as fee reductions, and maintenance grants to contribute to your living costs. 

I am aUkrainian student already in Ireland prior to 24/02/2022

If you would like to apply to study with us you can register you interest using this form. We will contact you with more information about how to apply to study with us as soon as we have more details. 

Even if you were in Ireland prior to February 24th 2022 you will be treated as an EU national, meaning that the EU rate of fee will apply, and you may be eligible for further supports such as fee reductions, and maintenance grants (SUSI grants) to contribute to your living costs. 

 

I am a student displaced from the Ukraine but am not a Ukrainian citizen? 

 The Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (DFHERIS) has confirmed that the Temporary Protection Directive applies to:

(a) Ukrainian and other Third Country Nationals who were permanently residing in Ukraine before 24 February 2022;

(b) Nationals of a third country (other than Ukraine) or stateless persons who would have benefited from international protection (e.g. refugee status) or an equivalent national protection status in Ukraine and have been residing there before 24 February 2022,

(c) Family members of persons covered by (a) and (b) where the family already existed in Ukraine at the time of events leading to the mass influx prior to 24 February.

If you are not covered by the Temporary Protection Directive in Ireland, this means that you will not be considered as an EU student.

If you arrive in Ireland and are designated as a refugee you may be eligible to apply for a University of Sanctuary Scholarship. You can find more information about the scheme here.  

When does the next academic year start at NUI Galway? 

For students joining National University of Ireland, Galway please note that teaching for the Academic Year 2022 to 2023 will begin in September 2022. 

I am a Ukrainian academic or researcher arriving in Ireland and would like to continue my academic activities at NUI Galway 

NUI Galway is a signatory to the Scholars at Risk scheme and we are actively working with the Irish government to investigate how we can support Ukrainian academics and researchers who have arrived in Ireland.
