Developing Partnerships

The High performance sports program has developed a number of key partnerships with Local High performance sports teams and organisations, National governing bodies, the Irish Institute of Sport and departments within the University that will enhance our support to students.


Student Sport Ireland (SSI)

University of Galway are board members of “Student Sport Ireland” which is the representative body of third level Sport in Ireland. As a part of this organisation NUIG are members of ENAS. The European National body of student sport and FISU, the Federation of University sport. This alliance enables NUIG to be at the forefront of national and international Sporting policy and a conduit for national policy.

Local Sports Partnership

The University Sports Unit are board members of the Local Sport’s Partnership (2008.)

Working with representative bodies from the wider community of Sport and Recreation of the local County and City councils. To support, promote and develop National Sports policy at a local level empowering the local community.

Galway Sports Partnership

Galway Sports Partnership was established in October 2012 as a result of a merger between County Galway Local Sports Partnership and Galway City Sports Partnership. Both of these entities were originally established in 2008.

Galway Sports Partnerships (GSP) is governed by a Steering Group. The Steering group is made up of a number of statutory agencies, community organisations and sporting representatives who have a role or interest in the area of participation in sport and physical activity. The membership of this Steering Group now reflects the changing landscape in so far as the community and voluntary sector is concerned, in that there are now 6 members elected from the Public Participation Network (PPN) – 3 representatives from Galway City and 3 from Galway County.

Galway Sports Partnership receives both strategic and policy guidance from Sport Ireland.

Galway Sports Partnership (GSP) is hosted by Galway Co. Co. and operates out of the Local Authority offices in Liosbaun Estate on the Tuam Road in Galway. We also maintain an office in Galway City Council offices, College Rd, Galway. GSP has three employees and all three positions are fully funded annually by the Sport Ireland.

Connacht GAA

University of Galway and Connacht GAA have worked together for over 20 years to promote Gaelic games within the University, including Football, Hurling, Camogie and Handball. The Gaelic Games Development Officer works with the students and the sports unit on their player pathway.

Each year, University of Galway men’s Gaelic football and hurling teams take part in the Connacht FBD football league and the Connacht Intermediate hurling league as well as the third level junior football competitions organised by Connacht GAA.

Connacht Rugby

University of Galway and Connacht Rugby have announced a comprehensive partnership to further develop the sporting, academic, research and educational links between the two. The partnership aims to nurture the next generation of sports performers and scholars.

The partnership will see University of Galway support the Connacht Rugby Academy and the Connacht Rugby Age Grade Representative teams. A key aspect of the partnership is the offer of structured third level education to elite players. This structured education will also involve a mentoring and development programme. The NUI Rugby Development Officer is the conduit for this partnership. 

Athletics Ireland

Athletics within the University of Galway is supported by 2 qualified Athletic Ireland coaches. The Regional Sports centre in Dangan hosts the University of Galway Athletics club and as a Regional centre enables the University of Galway to attract high performance athletes. 

Swim Ireland

The Connacht Swimming Performance Centre, CPC (2012) is hosted at the University Sports Centre, Kingfisher Club in University of Galway. The Centre is designed specifically to provide additional training hours, develop skills, provide opportunities for the best swimmers to train together on a weekly basis and provide support to club, coaches and athletes.  A total of twenty five swimmers currently avail of the centre, across a variety of training programmes. Swimmers are offered a range of sports science services such as strength and conditioning, video analysis and physiology which they can avail of both on  full and part-time programmes.

Rowing

Get Going... Get Rowing in Connacht

In 2014, Rowing Ireland received funding through The Irish Sports Council (ISC) Women in Sport initiative which enabled the creation of the Get Going… Get Rowing programme. 

In November  2014, University of Galway joined forces with Rowing Ireland to jointly fund the Get Going… Get Rowing programme in Connacht.

FAI

The FAI have been in partnership with the university since 2011. The underage FAI Elite pathway of Development leagues is hosted by NUIG in Dagan, on Saturdays and Sunday's for girls and boys from the ages of 10 to 14 (boys) and 12 to 16 (girls). 

These leagues are designed as a pathway for the best young players from the County and local leagues in Galway city to reach their full potential in soccer. There are approximately 120 boys (4 squads) and 90 girls (3 squads) attending. All are coached by fully licensed coaches from the FAI. All coaches are from the local Galway and District league.
