University of Galway is celebrating a landmark achievement in sustainability, with the newly released Energy & GHG Targets - Key Indicators Final Scorecard showing the University has already surpassed its 2030 energy efficiency target.

Since our baseline period (2016–2018 average), the University has:

  • Cut fossil fuel–related CO₂ emissions by 35.3%

  • Reduced overall CO₂ emissions by an impressive 50.7%

  • Improved energy efficiency by 57.2%, going beyond our 2030 target well ahead of schedule

These outstanding results are the outcome of strategic investment and the dedication of Seán Farrell (Head of Building Services, Buildings & Estates) and our Energy Team, and includes initiatives such as solar power, heat pumps, LED lighting, fleet electrification and critically, a culture of active energy management.

This achievement highlights the commitment of our teams to embedding sustainability across all operations and demonstrates the impact of a clear strategy and strong governance.
