The University of Galway’s School of Law has received a 4-star, ‘exceptional’ rating for 100% of its submitted impact case studies in a recent Institutional Review of Research Performance (IRRP).

The review commended the School’s research impact across a range of areas, including commissioned research, collaboration with NGOs and international organisations, political influence and cooperation, and high-level stakeholder engagement.

THE IRRP is quality review process of research performance conducted on a periodic basis, comparable to the UK’s Research Excellence Framework (REF).

Within the School of Law, 71% of research output was ranked as either 3- or 4-star (outstanding or exceptional), with 100% of submitted impact case studies receiving a 4-star rating. In the overall assessment of all research activity – covering outputs, environment and impact – the School achieved a 3/4-star ranking for 79% of its activity.

The IRRP report outlined a research culture of excellence in the School that continues to progress over time, stating: “The research environment statement sets out clear, strong values and ambitions, positioning the School as a rights-based, impact-driven research community.”

The review further noted that the “quality of the School’s impact activities is particularly impressive and the research management infrastructure has been transformed.”

Commenting on the results, Dean of the School of Law, Professor Martin Hogg, said: “The School’s fantastic IRRP results are a testimony to the research culture and very high-quality research work that has been such a hallmark of our research activities in recent years. We’re particularly pleased that the impact case studies of our three colleagues Professor Siobhán Mullally, Dr Maeve O’Rourke and Professor Shivaun Quinlivan were each awarded a 4-star, ‘exceptional’ rating. This independent review of our research activities has given renewed impetus to colleagues across the School to continue aiming high when it comes to research funding, first class publications, and impactful research.”
