Roundtable with IHREC on Detention and Oversight in Ireland
On 26 January 2026, members of the Crime, Punishment and Rights Research Cluster and officials from the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission met at the University of Galway for a roundtable discussion on detention, de facto detention and oversight in Ireland.
Deprivation of liberty across a wide range of settings, and oversight mechanisms to monitor such detention or deprivation of liberty, were discussed, with particular reference to requirements under the Optional Protocol on the Convention against Torture and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
