Research Ireland Funding to train new generation of Legal Observers in Ireland

Unlike most advanced democracies, Ireland does not have a strong tradition of legal observation at protests.

This project, led by Dr. Illan Wall from the Crime, Punishment and Rights Cluster, School of Law and Irish Centre for Human Rights, and Emily Williams from the Irish Council for Civil Liberties and funded by Research Ireland, is training a new cohort of legal observers.

Legal observers have three important functions - their presence changes the behaviour of participants; they help to protect protest rights; and they provide an independent documentation of the events.

The project has developed a new training programme, which has been run four times in Cork and Dublin, with over 120 participants.

There are upcoming training sessions in Galway (19th of June) and Kildare (tbc).

In addition to the training sessions, the project will also develop a manual for legal observers at protest and engage with the media and legal profession about the role.
