First Year School of Geography PhD student Alan Brouder (supervised by Dr Úna Murray) presented his work at the Global Sustainable Islands Summit (GSIS) 2026 in Gran Canaria on 21 April. Alan's PhD explores the political economy of adaptation finance in Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Alan was invited to speak as part of a session organised by the Our Shared Ocean programme, managed by the Marine Institute and funded by Irish Aid. The session was led and organised by David O'Sullivan, Programme Manager of Our Shared Ocean. The session aimed to facilitate strengthened collaboration and the sharing of research between Ireland and SIDS partners. PhD students from Cabo Verde and Guinea-Bissau also presented their work at the session. Rachel Fitzpatrick, SIDS Lead from Irish Aid took part in the session, expressing Ireland's continued support for SIDS.
The GSIS2026 event was organised by Island Innovation, an organisation that provides strategic support to governments and institutions working on island sustainability challenges. Co-hosted with the Cabildo de Gran Canaria (Gran Canaria Island Council), the Global Sustainable Islands Summit is the premier international forum for addressing sustainable development in island communities.
