Prof Michelle Millar

Chair of the Designing Futures Advisory Board

Professor Michelle Millar is the Programme Lead for Designing Futures and a Personal Professor of Political Science & Sociology. She is a member of the University Management Team with specific responsibility for Designing Futures - a new flagship programme in University of Galway whose mission is to drive transformational change, and support the evolution of the educational experience for our students, staff and enterprise partners. Professor Millar and her team play a lead role in the implementation of the University of Galway Strategy with particular focus on the objectives and initiatives that support the success of students in their education and their personal development.

A graduate of the University of Limerick, Michelle has taught Public Policy and Public Administration in the School of Political Science and Sociology since 1998. She was awarded the University of Galway President’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2017. She has provided programme leadership at undergraduate and postgraduate level since 1998, developed new programmes and served as the Chair of the School Teaching and Learning Committee 2014-18. In January 2018, she was appointed Head of School Political Science & Sociology. Michelle is a Senior Research Fellow at the UNESCO Child and Family Research Centre and has acted as Principal Investigator on several funded research projects, the most recent an IRC Social Protection Research Innovation Award the outputs of which culminated in her receiving the University of Galway President’s Award for Societal Impact in 2019.  Michelle is currently a Joint Principal Investigator for the evaluation of the Designing Futures programme at University of Galway.
