Clár: Our Ethos

Clár stands for Community Learning and Research.  The Irish word for ‘agenda’ or ‘platform’, Clár is a particularly appropriate acronym to capture the ethos of engaged teaching and research that underpins the mission, programmes and activities of the Centre for Global Women’s Studies. We understand “community” to encompass collective endeavour at local, national or global levels. The Centre for Global Women's Studies builds on a long tradition of community engagement in Women’s Studies at NUI Galway and a commitment to promoting global goals of peace, development and human rights.  Rooted in academic excellence, the Centre brings together learners and researchers who are passionate about cultivating critical thinking, knowledge and skills, in partnership with diverse communities, to foster positive change and to advance gender equality, women’s empowerment and human rights for all.
