Illness Benefit

Should your absence be for more than 5 days of ordinary illness or more than 5 consecutive calendar days on COVID-19 Special Leave with Pay, you must submit an Illness Benefit claim to the Department of Social Protection (DSP).  

Please Note: If you have already received illness benefit for another period of sick leave in the current calendar year you must then submit a claim after 3 days of ordinary illness for any further periods of sick leave.  

If you are in receipt of Illness Benefit from the Department of Social Protection you should inform them of your return-to-work date in order that your claim may be closed. Illness Benefit payment must NOT be lodged into a University of Galway account; this payment must be lodged into your personal bank account.  

When availing of Illness Benefit, please forward the Payment Statement available at www.mywelfare.ie  to HR Sick Leave upon your return to work to ensure that any Illness Benefit deductions are processed correct.
