Medical Certification

When Do I Need a Medical Certificate? 

A medical certificate is required: 

• From the third consecutive day of absence.
• From the first day of absence if your uncertified sick leave entitlement has been exhausted.  

Medical certificates should be submitted to your Line Manager and copied to HR Sick Leave: hrsickleave@universityofgalway.ie

Important Information 

• Sick leave is recorded in calendar days.
• Weekend days may count as sick leave where covered by a medical certificate. e.g. sick leave on Friday followed by sick leave Monday = 4 days of sick leave
• If you return to work before the end date on a medical certificate, a fit-to-return certificate or amended certificate from your doctor must be provided.
