Manager FAQ
Manager FAQ
Does a manager approve sick leave?
No. Sick leave is not subject to manager approval. Managers are responsible for recording, monitoring and supporting the process.
What should I do when an employee reports sick?
Ensure HR Sick Leave is informed and that required medical certification is received and forwarded as appropriate. Keep HR informed where sick leave is extended.
Am I expected to keep in contact with employees who are absent?
Yes. Managers should maintain reasonable and supportive contact with employees during periods of sick leave and follow up on any outstanding documentation.
If an employee is absent on Friday and Monday, is a medical certificate required?
Yes. This is treated as a continuous four-day absence and requires medical certification.
What support is available for employees with long-term illnesses?
Managers should work with HR and Occupational Health. Employees may be eligible for the Critical Illness Protocol, Temporary Rehabilitation Remuneration (TRR), or workplace supports following medical review.
What should I do when an employee returns to work?
Meet with the employee, complete the SL1 Return to Work Post Sick Leave (SL1) Form, and ensure it is submitted to HR Sick Leave.
