The ICAPSS delivers simulation-based education and training across the healthcare education continuum, from undergraduate students and early-career professionals to experienced clinicians, educators and simulation specialists. Our programmes span multiple healthcare professions and use a broad range of simulation modalities, including manikin-based simulation, procedural and task training, biological models for task training, simulated participants, hybrid simulation and interprofessional team-based simulation.

Our undergraduate programmes use simulation to help students develop clinical, procedural, communication and teamwork skills and to prepare safely for clinical practice. Simulation is integrated throughout the medical curriculum and is also used to support transition into clinical environments, including induction to ward and theatre settings and preparation for internship.

At postgraduate and professional levels, the ICAPSS provides education for healthcare professionals across disciplines and specialties, including clinical skills, team performance, human factors, communication and non-technical skills. Our programmes support both individual professional development and interprofessional learning, with education delivered for University of Galway, HSE and national and external healthcare partners.

Clinical Education and Training

The ICAPSS also supports the continuing education and training of the healthcare workforce through a wide range of clinical, procedural and interprofessional programmes. These include specialty-specific education, skills training, team-based simulation and programmes supporting transition, induction and preparedness for clinical practice.

Our education extends across medicine, nursing and midwifery and the health and social care professions, and includes programmes developed with healthcare services and national partners. This enables simulation to be used not only to teach individual skills, but to develop the competence, confidence and teamwork required to deliver safe care in complex clinical environments.

Diploma and Masters in Healthcare Simulation and Patient Safety

For almost a decade, the ICAPSS has delivered the Diploma and Masters in Healthcare Simulation and Patient Safety, providing formal postgraduate education for those who use, design, lead, teach and research simulation.

The programmes bring together learners from across the healthcare professions, from Ireland and internationally, alongside participants from disciplines including dentistry, veterinary medicine and engineering. This creates a uniquely diverse learning community spanning clinicians, educators, simulation technicians and operational and leadership roles.

Together, these programmes have supported the development of a growing international community of simulation practitioners and leaders and reflect the ICAPSS's commitment to building capability in simulation as a professional discipline.
