Join us for 'Human Rights, State Repression, and Criminal Selectivity in Disruptive Climate Protests' with Pratik Purswani as part of our Let’s Talk Research Seminar Series.

Abstract: The research examines the criminalisation of disruptive climate protests through the lens of human rights law and green criminology. While international and regional frameworks formally protect peaceful assembly and expression, their application to climate activism has been uneven. Across jurisdictions, we see an expansion of police powers and the imposition of harsher penalties in response to disruptive protest. By comparing developments within the European and Inter-American human rights systems, the study interrogates the claim of universality in human rights law and explores the selective operation of criminal justice in governing climate dissent.
