As Professor and Chair of the Discipline of Medical Education at the University of Galway, I welcome you to our website.
Medical (Healthcare) education is the structured process of teaching, learning, and training people to develop the knowledge, skills, professional behaviours, and values required to deliver safe, effective, and high-quality patient care.
Our Discipline supports healthcare programme teams develop innovative, evidence-based curriculums and methods of delivery, provides accessible and applicable faculty development opportunities and resources for academic and clinical educators, delivers postgraduate taught courses in Clinical Education and Healthcare Simulation and Patient Safety, and has established programmes of research in health professions education, including PhD opportunities.
Our vision is to redefine excellence in healthcare educational design and delivery, faculty development, and health professions education research—driving innovation, inspiring educators, and transforming healthcare learning.
Our Mission is to improve the design and delivery of healthcare education programmes that supports students in becoming competent graduates, fosters their continued development into expert practitioners through lifelong learning, and ultimately improves patient care and health outcomes.

About Us
At the heart of our Discipline is a dynamic and collaborative community of clinician educators and researchers, committed to working collaboratively with colleagues across the School of Medicine, College of Medicine & Health, HSE West and North West and wider national and international healthcare educator networks.
What makes our Discipline distinctive is the range of expertise within it in the areas of Student-centric Curriculum Development, Competency-based Education including Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs), Simulation-based Education, Interprofessional Education, Communication, Clinical Practice including Work-Based Assessment, Professional Practice including Professional Identity Formation, and Healthcare Education Research.
