Paediatrics
Welcome to the Discipline of Paediatrics
Welcome to the Academic Department of Paediatrics at the University of Galway. Our department brings together clinical educators, students and clinicians who share a common commitment: to improve outcomes for children and families, both locally and globally. We are proud of our multidisciplinary approach, where collaboration drives innovation in education and active research. Our vision is grounded in compassion, curiosity, and a deep respect for the unique needs of every child. We are committed to inspiring the next generation of paediatricians, researchers, and healthcare professionals, fostering critical thinking, empathy, and leadership. We educate our future generation to treat illness, promote lifelong health and development, and shape the future of child health.
About Us
The Academic Department of Paediatrics is located in the Clinical Science Institute of University of Galway. The academic team is comprised of Professor, Senior Lecturer, Lecturer, Tutors and Honorary Clinical Lecturers.
In addition to paediatric teaching and instruction at University Hospital Galway, clinical teaching and experience is delivered at the University of Galway affiliated hospitals/medical academies including, Mayo General Hospital Castlebar, Sligo General Hospital, Letterkenny General Hospital and Portiuncula Hospital Ballinasloe. With the assistance of the affiliated academies, it is the goal of the paediatric department to provide an informative, friendly and invaluable learning experience.
We support postgraduate non-consultant hospital doctor (NCHD) training including non-specialty trainees on various programmes (BSTs, and SPRs in conjunction with the RCP), GP and ED trainees. Training, education and audit is structured. Postgraduates are encouraged to become involved in research projects during their period of attachment as well as to present at national/international meetings.
