Overview

Placenames tell the story of Ireland's landscape and its linguistic history – but what role do they play in our towns and cities today? This microcredential is designed for anyone involved in naming housing developments, streets, or public spaces on behalf of a local authority or community group in Ireland. Whether you work in planning and housing departments, heritage or Irish-language sections of a local authority, or are involved in language-planning and promotion in the community – this course will give you the knowledge and confidence to engage with Irish-language placenames in urban contexts as part of your role. Over the course of your studies, you'll develop a clear, practical understanding of placenames in urban environments – including the legislation, policies, and guidelines that govern how Irish forms of names are proposed, assessed, and approved. By the end of the course, you'll be able to review existing names and evaluate new proposals with confidence, and you'll know where to find authoritative guidance and resources as recommended by national authorities.
