Course Overview

The BA (Joint-Honours) in Law programme has a long and distinguished history at NUI Galway. This programme allows students the flexibility to combine the study of law with a range of complementary subjects. In first year, students take Law as one of their three subjects and they take two other subjects from the Arts group of subjects (see the Arts page for further details) such as Law with Sociology and Politics, with Languages, English or History.

The BA in Law programme gives students a solid grounding in law while also providing them with a well-rounded education. There is a wide variety of subjects to choose from. Furthermore, those who wish to qualify as a solicitor or barrister may proceed into the final year of the LLB programme. Upon graduation from the LLB programme students can pursue professional legal training as a solicitor (with the Law Society of Ireland) or as a barrister (with the King’s Inns).

Curriculum Information

Curriculum information relates to the current academic year (in most cases).
Course and module offerings and details may be subject to change.

Glossary of Terms

Credits
You must earn a defined number of credits (aka ECTS) to complete each year of your course. You do this by taking all of its required modules as well as the correct number of optional modules to obtain that year's total number of credits.
Module
An examinable portion of a subject or course, for which you attend lectures and/or tutorials and carry out assignments. E.g. Algebra and Calculus could be modules within the subject Mathematics. Each module has a unique module code eg. MA140.
Subject
Some courses allow you to choose subjects, where related modules are grouped together. Subjects have their own required number of credits, so you must take all that subject's required modules and may also need to obtain the remainder of the subject's total credits by choosing from its available optional modules.
Optional
A module you may choose to study.
Required
A module that you must study if you choose this course (or subject).
Required Core Subject
A subject you must study because it's integral to that course.
Semester
Most courses have 2 semesters (aka terms) per year, so a three-year course will have six semesters in total. For clarity, this page will refer to the first semester of year 2 as 'Semester 3'.

Why Choose This Course?

Career Opportunities

Not all law graduates choose to practice as solicitors or barristers. Many graduates decide to pursue careers outside legal practice. Law graduates acquire knowledge and skills through their programme that ensure that they are highly employable in many sectors.

BA (Joint-Honours) graduates may choose to work in the public sector (Government Departments, Local Government, the Law Reform Commission, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Courts Service, Office of the Attorney General, the Oireachtas etc).

Other graduates may opt for graduate training programmes or for careers in accountancy, banking, taxation, insurance, compliance or with institutions such as the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the European Commission, the Court of Justice of the European Union or the European Court of Human Rights.

What Our Students Say

Laura

Laura Freyne |   BA (Joint-Honours) in Law

...I initially chose to study Law at NUI Galway because its Arts course gave me a chance to experience a broad range of subjects and take on to degree level the ones that most interested me. I had also heard that college life in Galway is second to none; to this I can testify! Throughout my college life here, I have been an avid member and promoter of many clubs and societies and even became the Auditor of one in my final year. There are over 80 societies in NUI Galway so there is something for everyone! Today, I have a BA International Degree in Legal Science and French, which included an Erasmus year in Poitiers France, and also have completed the one year postgraduate LLB degree...
