The main areas of research carried out in the Discipline of Obstetrics & Gynaecology are: Myometrial Physiology, Pre-Term Labour, Pre-Natal Diagnosis, High-Risk Obstetrics, Cerebral Palsy Pre-Natal Diagnosis and Maternal Disease in Pregnancy.

Themes & Areas

The Discipline of Obstetrics & Gynaecology has collaborated in a number of clinical trials as a member of Perinatal Ireland and the HRB Ireland Perinatal Clinical Trials Network Ireland. A large number of patients from Galway University Hospital have been recruited over the years to the ESPRIT, PORTO and PARROT clinical research trials. Funding in excess of €20m has been received by the discipline, as both PIs and collaborators, since 2005. These include the Ireland Perinatal Clinical Trials Network funded by HRB (€2,728,980), the OptiBirth project funded by EU FP7 (€2,900,000), the Clinical Research Facility Galway funded by HRB (€10,855,594) and the National Obstetric Ultrasound Ireland Consortium/Perinatal Ireland funded by HRB (€3,900,000).
