Overview
The Lorcan Shannon Scholarship supports and empowers an outstanding student entering Year 1 at the University of Galway to pursue studies in Law. The scholarship recognises academic ambition and provides financial assistance to students who would benefit from additional support at the beginning of their university journey.
The scholarship is funded by University of Galway alumnus Lorcan Shannon and administered through the Galway University Foundation.
About the Scholarship
Established by Lorcan Shannon, a practising lawyer based in New York City, this scholarship reflects a strong commitment to supporting access to legal education and student success.
Through this scholarship, Lorcan aims to support students in pursuing their studies in Law, while encouraging academic excellence, ambition, and the development of future leaders in the legal profession, as well as expanding access to the study of Law at his alma mater.
Scholarship Details
The Lorcan Shannon Scholarship will be awarded annually to one student entering Year 1 of a programme at the University of Galway which includes Law, specifically:
- An undergraduate Law degree programme, or
- An Arts programme, where the student is taking a minimum of 20 ECTS of Law modules per year
The scholarship supports students for the duration of their undergraduate studies, up to a maximum of four years.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be entering Year 1 of a qualifying programme which includes Law at the University of Galway
- Demonstrate academic potential and motivation
- Demonstrate financial need
- Qualify for and be in receipt of financial support through SUSI (Special Rate or Bands 1–4), or
- Be registered as a HEAR / Mature / FETAC / Access student, or
- Provide evidence of financial need, as assessed by the University
Applicants must also have accepted and registered for their place at the University of Galway.
Value
The Scholar will receive the euro equivalent of $5,000 per annum for the duration of their undergraduate studies, up to a maximum of four years.
The scholarship award will be applied towards tuition fees at the University of Galway or issued as a stipend where the student is already in receipt of other financial aid or where fees are not applicable.
Selection Process
Applicants will be required to complete an online application form and provide a personal statement outlining their academic goals, personal background, and how the scholarship would support their studies.
Applications will be reviewed by a selection panel, and shortlisted candidates may be invited for interview. The decision of the selection panel is final. Detailed feedback is not available in the case of unsuccessful applications.

Lorcan Shannon Scholarship – Terms & Conditions
- The Scholarship will be awarded to one student entering Year 1 of a programme at the University of Galway which includes Law, as outlined above.
- The Scholar will receive the euro equivalent of $5,000 per annum, for up to a maximum of four years, subject to continued eligibility and satisfactory academic progression.
- The scholarship award will be applied towards tuition fees at the University of Galway or issued as a stipend where applicable.
- The University’s selection process is final. Detailed feedback is not available in the case of an unsuccessful application.
- If multiple applications are of the same standard, preference will be given to applicants demonstrating greater financial need.
- Students will not be entitled to hold this scholarship in conjunction with another bursary, scholarship, or award of a similar nature.
- Students must demonstrate financial need through SUSI (Special Rate or Bands 1–4), HEAR/Mature/FETAC/Access status, or other supporting documentation as required.
- Any offer of a scholarship is dependent on the accuracy of the information provided. The University reserves the right to withdraw an offer where information is found to be incorrect, with 14 days’ written notice.
- Scholarships will only be awarded to applicants who have been formally offered and accepted a place on a qualifying programme at the University of Galway.
- Each scholarship is awarded to the named applicant only and is non-transferable.
- The scholarship is open to EU and Non-EU students.
- The Scholar must commence their programme of study in the 2026/27 academic year and complete their studies within the standard timeframe.
- The scholarship is not extendable to cover deferred or repeated years, except in exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the University.
- The Scholar will be expected to attend a Scholarship Awards Ceremony.
- The Scholar may be required to participate in the Student Ambassador Programme for up to 1–2 hours per week, where appropriate.
- The Scholar may be asked to participate in promotional activities, including providing a photograph and testimonial for impact reporting.
- If a Scholar withdraws from their programme or fails to meet academic requirements, they may be required to repay all or part of the scholarship.
- The Scholar agrees to allow relevant data to be shared within the University for the purpose of administering the scholarship.
- The University may provide the donor with an annual update confirming the Scholar’s academic progress and standing.
- All scholarship recipients must adhere to the University of Galway Student Code of Conduct.
- The University of Galway reserves the right to amend these Terms and Conditions, in consultation with the donor, where necessary.
