Getting Registered
What is Registration?
Registration is the collection and maintenance of student data. All information is stored centrally on the Student Record System. All students at NUI Galway must register ONLINE to become students of the University each year, this is obligatory.
When do I register?
Click here for open and close dates. Registration opens @ 10.00am on the given date.
You will receive an email from Registration inviting you to register online. You must register as soon as possible, once Online Registration opens, to gain access to University services such as Student ID Card, Library, Blackboard, Access to rooms etc.
What is my login?
- Your logon is a combination of a Username and Password.
- Your User Name is a unique 8-digit student ID number issued to you by the Postgraduate Admissions Office. This is now your Student ID number.
- Password details will be included in your email from the university's IT section (ISS).
- *If you are a returning student and have already activated your MFA, use your latest campus account password

My PhD Start date is after 1st March, How do I Register?
As you are starting your course between 1st March and 31st August, you will commence in a ‘0’ course stream e.g. 0SPC1. This stream allows you to register, obtain your student card set up your campus student accounts and gain access to a wide range of campus services and facilities.
*You will need to register again in August of this year for the 1st year of your course e.g. 1SPC1. All details will be on the registration webpage www.nuigalway.ie/registration later in the year. Click here for Information on How To Register now for Year 0.

- *Structured/Research Phd’s: Please ensure your area of research is on your student portal.
Your area of Research will have 0 ects beside it, this is used for tracking your area of research and your discipline. - If your course allows you to choose different subjects / modules, you should direct any queries directly to the Discipline. Each department has guidelines regarding subject choices and options. Click here for details of College Offices.

I am a past student of this University, do I get a new ID number?
No. Please note that it is NUI Galway policy to retain your full student history under your first (or old) NUI Galway ID number. You will therefore be required to register using your existing NUI Galway student number (please do not register using your application number). There are, unfortunately, implications for your student account if you register under the wrong number; you can read these here .
