To help support your academic journey at University of Galway School of Law, we are delighted to offer several scholarships and prizes many of which would not be possible without our generous donors.

Lorcan Shannon Scholarship

The Lorcan Shannon Scholarship supports and empowers an outstanding student entering Year 1 at University of Galway to pursue studies in Law. The scholarship recognises academic ambition and provides financial assistance to students who would benefit from additional support at the beginning of their university journey. The scholarship is worth $20,000 dollars and is funded by University of Galway alumnus Lorcan Shannon and administered through the Galway University Foundation.

RDJ Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship

As part of RDJ’s commitment to a diverse talent pool in Law the RDJ Scholarship at University of Galway is intended to promote diversity in the School of Law by providing financial support to students who are under-represented in Law. The monetary value of the scholarship will be a total of €5,000.  The scholarship also includes a six-week summer work placement at RDJ’s Galway office. The scholarship is open to students from specified priority areas who are registered in 2nd year on any BCL or 3 year (F/T) / 4 year (P/T) LLB programme at University of Galway and have achieved at least a 2H2 average in their previous year's results in law modules.

Terence O'Malley DLA Piper Scholarship

The Terence O' Malley DLA Piper Scholarship will support the successful Scholar throughout their degree to a minimum value of €7,500. The Scholarship is open to applicants who have made a formal application through the Central Applications Office for a first year place on one of the full-time undergraduate designated programmes of study in University of Galway School of Law. The Scholar will preferably have a home address in Mayo but consideration will be given to applicants with a home address in the West of Ireland (to include all counties in Connacht plus counties Donegal and Clare). The scholarship is awarded on the financial need and academic merit of the successful applicants.

THE THOMSON REUTERS – ROUND HALL PRIZE

The Prize consists of Round Hall books currently to the value of €200. The Prize is awarded annually to the student who achieves first place at the First Arts Examination in Law provided the student passes clearly the First Arts Examination in its entirety.

THE OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS LAW PRIZE

The value of the prize is £150 sterling worth of Oxford University Press Books.  The prize is awarded annually to the student who achieves first place at the first year Bachelor of Civil Law Examination, provided the candidate passes on the first attempt and achieves at least a Second Class Honours, Grade 1 standard.   

THE VAL O'CONNOR MEMORIAL PRIZE IN EQUITY

This Prize was originally made possible by a generous donation from the family of the late Mr. T.V. O'Connor to the University in 1989. The Prize is awarded annually to the candidate who achieves the highest mark in the subject 'Equity' from among the total number of candidates presenting in Equity at the Summer Examination session in any one of the following examinations: Second and Final BCL, Second and Final LLB full-time mode, provided the candidate passes overall in the examination in question, and that the School of Law is satisfied that a satisfactory standard has been reached. The prize is valued at €200.

BYRNE WALLACE SHIELDS LLP HUGH GARVEY MEMORIAL AWARD FOR INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

This Prize was originally made possible in 2016/17 in honour of Hugh Garvey. The Prize is awarded annually to the candidate who achieves the highest mark in the subject 'Industrial and Intellectual Property Law' from among the total number of candidates presenting in Industrial and Intellectual Property Law at the Summer Examination session in any one of the following examinations: Second and Final BCL, Final Law and Business, Second and Final LLB full-time mode, Final, provided the candidate passes overall in the examination in question, and that the School of Law is satisfied that a satisfactory standard has been reached. The prize is valued at €750.

TERENCE O’MALLEY DLA PIPER BURSARY

The prize consists of an annual bursary of €1,500. The Terence O’Malley DLA Piper bursary will be awarded to the student achieving the highest grade in the School of Law's Law and Innovation module.

GILBA AWARD,   GERMAN-IRISH LAWYERS & BUSINESS ASSOCIATION

The College of Business, Public Policy and Law is pleased to announce the granting of a student award by the German Irish Lawyers & Business Association to the students who achieve the highest marks in Second Year Legal German and Second Year German on the BComm programme. The successful student will receive a prize to the value of €250 each, plus a certificate in recognition of the student’s achievement and free annual membership of the German-Irish Lawyers and Business Association.

Corrigan & Corrigan Solicitors LLP is delighted to introduce a new Tort Prize for undergraduate students of University of Galway School of Law.

Conditions:

  1. Students must be registered first-year undergraduate students of Tort Law (LW262 or LW3109) at University of Galway.
  1. To be eligible for consideration students:
  • must have passed the Tort Law module and
  • must have passed first year overall and
  • the School of Law must be satisfied that an appropriate standard has been reached.
  1. The prize will be awarded to the student with the highest result in Tort Law. The result is calculated using the result in the written examination and any continuous assessments.
  1. Where more than one student has the same highest result the prize will be evenly shared between those students.
