NUI Galway 1916 Scholar in Residence

Dr Conor McNamara is NUI Galway’s 1916 Scholar in Residence, and will co-ordinate and curate many of the events in the University’s commemorative programme. Conor's research focuses on political violence and social upheaval in nineteenth and twentieth century Ireland. He has written extensively on food shortage in the West in the first half of the nineteenth century, social upheaval during the revolutionary period, and the intersection between political violence and banditry.

Based in the University’s Moore Institute, Conor’s role will see him conducting research on the 1916 Rising and its context in Co. Galway and elsewhere in the West of Ireland. He will prepare a catalogue of resources, in Irish and English, in the NUI Galway archives and elsewhere, with a view to facilitating future research on the revolutionaries of 1916-23. Throughout the year, Conor will engage with local community groups across the West, and assist with a planned exhibition marking Galway’s role in the Great War and the Irish Revolution.
