Micro-credential Overview

This micro-credential is designed to give the students all the tools to be able to identify the main organic and inorganic gemstones correctly as well as to introduce them to diamond grading and gemstone marketing.  Also offering micro-credential EOS 204: Recording Gemstone Properties which is also a micro-credential from the Diploma in Gemmology

Topics include: Gemstones and Jewellery; Gemstone Cuts; Cutting Gemstones; Diamond and its simulants; Diamond Grading; Valuations.  Recording the properties of numerous gem varieties (e.g. Corundum, Diamond, Tanzanite, Topaz, Tourmaline). The learner will also learn in detail about all the materials which are of an organic nature and are considered gemstones.

Academic Year 2024/25 - Semester 2

Mode of Study and Assessment

The mode of study for this Micro-credential is Blended Learning (in-person and online).

Assessment will be carried out on a continuous basis.

From the 1st April 2024 you can apply for any University of Galway Micro-credential through our Online Application Portal

When completing your application please make sure to select the following categories:

Academic level: Micro-credentials and CPD
College/Interest type: Micro-credentials/CPD Undergrad Level 9.
Academic programme: Science and Engineering Micro-credentials CPB15.

You will need to manually enter the Module Name and Code under ‘Module Name’ on the second page of your application. Please copy the name and code below:
