Micro-credential Overview
This module is designed to equip the students with all the tools needed to be able to record the properties of numerous gem varieties (e.g. Corundum, Diamond, Tanzanite, Topaz, Tourmaline) including materials of organic nature (e.g. Opal). The students will be able to identify the main organic and inorganic gemstones correctly and will also be introduced to diamond grading and gemstones marketing and valuations.
Learning Outcome
- Learn about the physical and optical properties of diamonds (as well as corundum, tanzanite, topaz, tourmaline, pearls, jadeite, opal).
- Grade diamonds by their colour and clarity
- Learn about different types of cuts and the parameters for ideal cuts
- Ability to check the final grade of diamonds, i.e., Polish and overall appearance
- Learn the value of diamonds according to their weight
- Distinguish a natural diamond from substitutes, and study the treatment of enhancement of a diamond
Practicals on campus on Saturday mornings at 10 am till 4:30 pm (including up to 1 hour lunch break) on the following dates:

Mode of Study and Assessment
The mode of study for this Micro-credential is Blended Learning (in-person and online).
Assessment: Evaluation of written lab book reports, online tests and assignments.

From the 1st April 2024 you can apply for any University of Galway Micro-credential through our Online Application Portal.
When completing your application please make sure to select the following categories:
Academic level: Micro-credentials and CPD
College/Interest type: Micro-credentials/CPD Undergrad 7 and 8
Academic programme: Science and Engineering Micro-credentials CPB15.
You will need to manually enter the Module Name and Code under ‘Module Name’ on the second page of your application. Please copy the name and code below:
