Micro-credential Overview

This module introduces students to the theory behind simple and compound machines.  Topics will cover reliability of a system, gearing and gear ratio theory, spring decision and design criteria. Machine Design also introduces the students to some 3D printing for assembly. This helps introduce and develop the students’ 3D modelling skills.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this micro-credential students will:

  • Comprehend core methodologies required to design various machines and machine parts.
  • Identify the theory behind simple and compound machines, reliability of a system, gearing and gear ratio theory, spring decision and design criteria.
  • Understand 3D printing for assembly, 3D Computer Aided Modelling and additive manufacturing such as 3D printing.
  • Establish various critical machine parts for everyday scenarios using formulae, tables and catalogues.

The mode of study for this Micro-credential is Online Learning.

Assessment will be carried out on a continuous basis.

From the 1st April 2024 you can apply for any University of Galway Micro-credential through our Online Application Portal

When completing your application please make sure to select the following categories:

Academic level: Micro-credentials and CPD
College/Interest type: Micro-credentials/CPD Undergrad Level 7 and 8.
Academic programme: Science and Technology Micro-credentials - CPB1.

Course Fees

€500

Subsided fee: €250

*Candidates who meet the eligibility criteria may qualify for a 50% fee subsidy, subject to the availability of subsidised places.

Entry Requirements 

  • Applicants should have a Diploma at NFQ Level 7 of 90 ECTS minimum, in a Science, Engineering or Technical area. 
  • Applicants must be over 21 years of age. 
  • Applications can be considered using Recognition of Prior Learning.
